FB/LB David Durham (transfer to Pittsburgh)

I was just going off his frame in the picture, I haven't seen film yet. I'll check it out soon. That would be awesome if he could play MIKE though, as I see no obvious MIKE's in the '08 class.

Don't get me wrong, I think he can be a nasty DE also...probably has a higher ceiling there as well. However, he is very impressive on the 2nd level as is...and true MIKEs are tough to find.

Win-win.

The BPRT has been talking about how this whole situation might impact Hicks and a couple of us think the Durham offer has nothing to do with Hicks...they are completely different kinds of players. I could see 3 LBs in this class if they are Turner, McVey and Hicks. Moore and Durham will play with their hand in the dirt, IMO.

You mean, hand in the ground-up rubber?

Welcome, David!

Likely sais more about what a long shot Khairi Fortt would be. I can't imagine we would turn either McVey or Hicks away even after this committment.

Michigan fan helps lead recruit to OSU

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- Pat O'Harra still can't get over assisting the enemy, a Michigan fan living in Texas dropping a football recruit into Ohio State's lap.
"I was talking to my brother and he said my stepfather probably rolled over in his grave," O'Harra said by phone Tuesday morning. "All my friends in Ohio sent me about 100 e-mails about helping out Ohio State football."
O'Harra is the wrestling coach at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, and Monday morning, his 215-pounder, David Durham, who also happens to be a linebacker / defensive end, became the fourth oral commitment in Ohio State's 2010 recruiting class. Durham's initial exposure to the Buckeyes came at the end of January when O'Harra, who grew up in a Michigan family in the Columbus suburb of Grandview Heights, brought his wrestling team to the Columbus area for a tournament.
Feeling bad that Durham was missing a recruiting day at another college, O'Harra called Ohio State linebackers coach Luke Fickell before the trip. Durham sent highlights to Ohio State, then met with Fickell while in Columbus, returned for another visit last weekend, and accepted a scholarship offer.
"It did kind of happen by chance," Durham said. "I don't want to say I'm shocked, but the situation is a shock to most people."

I've never though OSU was a serious player for Fortt...would love to be wrong but I could easily see him ending up at PSU.

Coaching Changes '09: Permian's Allman leaving Mojo for Westlake

pixel.gif

It even felt weird typing it: "Allman comes from Odessa Permian."

Coaches don't leave Odessa Permian, do they? Apparently they do. Head coach and athletic director Darren Allman is stepping down in Mojo Land to take the head coaching job at Austin Westlake. He'll replace Derek Long, a long-time assistant who had been the HC of the Chaps for the past six seasons.
Though few venues can match the enormous pressure to win at Odessa Permian, Allman will be expected to contend for state championships almost immediately at Westlake. It goes without saying that the school has a proud history of success, and the talent that flows through its halls annualy is substantial. Allman went 38-11 in his four seasons at Permian's helm. Interestingly, Allman said part of his decision was his desire to work at a school that stood alone in the community. Though Westlake is commonly lumped in with Austin ISD schools, the Chaps would certainly fit that bill. But Allman leaves behind some personal history, as well -- a former Mojo himself, Allman is the only Permian player in history to also serve as the school's head coach.

As alluded to by others, Durham is coming from a top program. One recruit does not make a pipeline, but it is nice to have a foot in the door at a Texas power. For that matter, it's nice to be prowling around top programs in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania as well.

I would think so too, but a thing that could negate a "foot in the door" is a change in regime.

Durham is from far from nowhere
Maybe recent Ohio State commitment David Durham did sort of pop up on the radar unexpectedly. But did he come out of nowhere? Hardly.
Durham, who sees himself as perhaps the next Bobby Carpenter or Thaddeus Gibson in terms of that hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker position the Buckeyes employ, is from Westlake High School just outside of Austin, Texas. Westlake is considered one of the perennial powers in Class 5A (big-school) in that state.
Just this week the school sealed the deal, or maybe make it the steal, with a new head coach. It lured Darren Allman from Odessa Permian. If you are a true football fan, you no doubt have heard of Permian, the subject of the acclaimed book "Friday Night Lights" and the ensuing movie and television show of the same name.
In other words, Permian -- home of the Mojo -- is a place where the folks take high school football seriously. Now its coach is stepping up to a new challenge at Westlake, which progressed all the way to the state quarterfinals last season.
Westlake has produced several players of acclaim, but none more celebrated than quarterback Drew Brees. He led the Chaparrals to their only state championship in 1996 before heading to Purdue, then on to the NFL. Westlake has made it to five state title games since 1994, the last coming in 2006.
As for Durham, he moved into that cauldron from Charlotte, N.C., his eighth grade year. That's one reason his eyes were wide open when it came to the recruiting thing. He wasn't fixated on trying to make the jump from Westlake to the nearby University of Texas, which by the way, had yet to make him scholarship offer.

Link has video as well

"I just liked everything about Ohio State," added David Durham. "There was not one particular thing that drew me to OSU. The name and the facilities speak for itself, but most important were the people at OSU. The coaches, everybody, I just fit in up there. The defensive schemes, just everything. That is what I want more than anything (to play for OSU). I am just blessed to achieve my goal."

Having a father who went through the recruiting process was an added bonus for David.

"He told me make my decision based on the whole package, not just the football program. That is what he really encouraged me to do. He has never missed a game of my mine. That is his favorite thing to do, watch me play football."

The 6' 2", 225 pound linebacker could be moving down to end for the Buckeyes.

"They envision me coming off of the edge being a pass rusher. I do not care where they put me. I do like playing defense though."

Last season David had roughly 80 tackles and 7 sacks.

He only plans to attend the OSU camp this summer and might go back on April 25th for their Spring game.

"I am 110% committed to OSU. I am only going to OSU from here on out. I am 100% Buckeye."
