FB Branden Joe (official thread)

Once again I find myself in the minority, but I hate Joe as a tailback.

He gives teams no threat of the Home run. He can nickle and dime teams, but he isn't going to break one for more than 10 yards, and that is only if the defense is not playing the run at all. If the line doesn't give him a hole he doesn't have a chance.

It would be nice to be able to kill the clock late in the game on the ground. Coach Tressel is not going to change. If we have a lead in the second half Coach wants to pound the football. How many times did we go 3 and out last year because we couldn't effectively run the football? The coaches wanted to use Joe in that role last year but his chest injury wouldn't allow it. The running game has to improve, especially with a young quarterback under center. Our o-line is going to have some growing pains and Lydell and Mo have yet to prove to me they can break tackles. I think Brandon Joe showed in the Fiesta Bowl that he can.

I just like the fact that we are going to have Ross, Hall, Joe, Guilford, Parker, Haw, Pittman and Kennedy (maybe a db) competing for the job. They will all push each other in one way, shape or form.

Ross made some comments yesterday about envisioning himself as, "the best back in the country". I know he is mentally preparing himself and he has to aim high but 826 yards doesn't get the job done. I hope to hell he surprises us all but I welcome Joe and others to carry the mail and get the job done should he have a typical Ross season!

Brandon Joe at tailback

Am I the only one here that would love to see Brandon Joe get some more carries this season? He strikes me as the type of bruiser that will get stronger as the game goes on, and one that will wear down a defense. He demonstrated his ability to run the ball in the Fiesta bowl, I wonder if he'll be called upon more often this season.

Just thinking out loud, what do you all think?

I do think that he would be a good asset in the backfield carrying the ball. He would give the offense the neccessary power it may lack with Flydell and Mo Hall. He showed great promise against KSt. And let's hope he can continue it this season.

I agree with you tmporter. The K-State game was his finest i believe and the effort he showed was great and our offensive line showed some surprises i thought. I am hoping JT can use him in critical stages of the game plans this year. And also i hope he behaves himself and whatever he does, to do it in his own privacy. Good luck to Brandons season.

As long as we are talking about carries from the FB/1B postion I think it is a great idea

When I posted this thought I was mostly envisioning him out of a single back formation with 3 WR's and a TE, or 2 WR's and 2 TE's.

I wonder if Tressel will bring back the unbalanced line this year? I loved when he used to run from that formation, it's a rare thing these days.

Well-- I think joe is goingt o have to be prepared to do his fair share of the 1B work... whether we use him in it a lot is a different story... but just because of all the usual reasons... mostly experience and blocking... Dunno how Pittman is coming along with his blocking.. and I'm sure Haw is behind him... I'm sure they'll both learn quickly... but week one is a lot to ask...

I'd love to see it but I don't really see him getting more than 4 or 5 carries a game. JT likes to use the fullback in the I to block so unless he's revamped the whole offensive scheme I don't think we'll see it. I loved the way Joe ran the ball against KSU though - reminded me of Barry Foster with the Steelers. Great explosion through the hole, and we almost never saw that with any of the other backs.

FB Brandon Joe (official thread)

Per the O-Zone.

He was seen with a walking cast on his right ankle. Any docs out there share if this could just be precautionary? Would hate to lose Joe for any amount of time!! :smash: The running game can't afford something like this!!!

relax penguin, it could just be that he twisted his ankle and is taking it easy. there is still a few weeks till the first game. I am sure he will be ready if that is all it is, it doesn't take that long to heal, alot of tape helps too.
