FB Branden Joe (official thread)

I'm not on his back, so put the "defensive" card away. I merely pointed out no one should be happy to be hurt and third on the depth chart...a point I don't think too many would dispute (and I don't think he'll start, I think Schnitker will start at least the first couple of games, but I could be wrong). He's not a captain because he's had off-field issues...he shouldn't be surprised, and I'm sure he'll move past it. I'm not putting words in his mouth...please don't put them in mine. :)

He has let his play do the talking in the past and he will in the future. He is one of the best pass catching and running FBs we've had in a long time.

Re-read what HE said vs. what was said by a writer... I think you are putting words in his mouth. He wanted to be captain... he's not... he'll live. PLAY BALL!

"Captian" isn't much more than a title - not being one shouldn't stop him from being a leader, and I don't think it will. I'm sure not being a captain isn't gonna stop A.J. Hawk from being a leader on the other side of the ball.

If he lets his play do the talking (for a change) he'll be fine.
Lion,

I objected to the assumptions made by the author of the article and the title of the thread and I took your "for a change" as piling on. Can you please explain what "for a change" meant as I must have misunderstood? I like Joe and he doesn't seem to be a loudmouth to me, so I couldn't understand what you meant by this.

If I sound defensive it's because I took your comments as offensive. If I just misunderstood then I over-reacted and I apologize. I'm not attacking you, I just didn't want to see a "bash Joe" thread get started because I don't think he deserves that.

===============================================

The nagging pain in Branden Joe’s ankle likely is nothing compared with the nagging question in his mind of why he was not named an Ohio State captain.

The fifth-year senior fullback from Westerville is gregarious and likable, a natural leader who has a smile and an "attaboy" punch on the arm for everyone.

He has endured much in his OSU career — injuries both major and minor that have robbed him of prime playing-time opportunities, the anonymity of his position and two alcoholrelated incidents.

The first was a drunken driving conviction in August 2002, for which he was suspended from the team for three weeks and missed the opener.

The second was an opencontainer citation in April.

Last week, two days before OSU’s captains were announced, Joe openly campaigned for the coveted honor.

"Yeah, it would be special for me," he said. "For me to regain the trust of my teammates — for them to elect me as captain — would be overwhelming. I’d be so privileged."

He did not believe then that his legal troubles had lost him that trust.

"When you’re in a family situation like we are here at Ohio State, I think the guys you’re closest to really know who you are," Joe said. "And they knew that guys make mistakes. It’s about how you rebound from your mistakes."

Yet the Buckeyes selected Simon Fraser, Dustin Fox, Lydell Ross and Mike Nugent as captains.

Captain or not, several Buckeyes think of Joe as a team leader.

"He’s definitely a passionate guy and he’s more of a vocal guy," tight end Ryan Hamby said. "He will let you know when we need to pick it up and what’s going wrong, but he’s also that guy right there to tell you, ‘Nice job, good block,’ whatever."

Guard Mike Kne said, "He takes in the young guys and helps them out, and everybody just talks to him and knows him."

Now, there’s nothing Joe can do but start another campaign — to touch the ball a little more often in his final go-round.

Through three seasons and 12 games, Joe had 17 career carries and three receptions. But in the Fiesta Bowl win over Kansas State, the Buckeyes suddenly turned to their 6-foot, 235-pound bruiser. Joe carried 11 times for 46 yards, much of that on a third-quarter drive that ended in a touchdown and a 35-14 lead.

"It was a dream come true," Joe said. "I always knew in the back of my mind that I could handle certain situations if I was put in at the right time, and it just happened."

In the spring, the talk was that Joe could be one solution to OSU’s rushing struggles, perhaps in a one-back set.

"Branden is a guy that I think gives us a good tempo change, both at fullback and tailback," coach Jim Tressel said, "and he catches the ball very, very well."

Tackle Rob Sims, for one, would like to see that.

"I think he’s going to get a lot more touches this year, which will be good, because he’ll probably get about 10 to 15 yards a carry," Sims said. "When he gets the ball and gets that body rolling, not too many want to get in his way."

The problem is getting that body rolling. A shoulder injury caused him to redshirt his freshman season.

Before last season, he tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights and missed most of the first seven games.

He sat out most of the spring after turning an ankle, then aggravated the injury this preseason. He is questionable for OSU’s opener Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ross has looked strong, Maurice Hall is trying to get into the mix after a string of knee injuries and freshmen Tony Pittman and Erik Haw have flashed ability.

The need to use Joe as a ball carrier might not be as urgent.

"(Injuries are) frustrating and it’s almost like I have a camp curse on me," Joe said. "But I try to stick it out. I try to stay as close to my teammates as possible, whether I’m participating in camp or . . . cheerleading on the sidelines. I try to be a leader in any situation."

The captaincy was not his to have. Nor, except for one brief burst, has he experienced much personal glory.

There’s still time, but it’s down to 11 games.

"I definitely haven’t put everything together yet in my career," Joe said. "I’m looking forward to putting it together this year."

Uh, bucknuts44820, I don't see anything in this article that even remotely suggests he's pissed at not being named a captain.

Boro....I was merely wondering what the article said because I dont subsribe not trying to start trouble, only asking if anyone read the article, I dont see why that would warrant negative rep points for my previous post, I did not write article merely wanted to know what it said, so please don't put words in my mouth.

MililaniBuckeye, thanks for posting the article for me to read....

It may not be urgent - I'm not sure if it ever would have been considered urgent - but I still think that Joe will be able, and called upon, to regularly provide a change of pace with some punishment running. He's a good player, and provided he stays healthy, I anticipate him being a pretty important part of the offense - captain or no.

BitB,

It's OK...I understand, and I don't want a "bash Joe" thread either, because I don't think he deserves it, either. I've never heard him utter a word of trouble. "for a change" was actually probably poorly utilized in that particular context, because my point was that he's a guy that you don't really hear much about except for his off-the-field issues, but it made it sound like I thought he talked a lot of crap, which he does not. The lack of good press is due to many factors, including the position (FB rarely gets any good pub), the fact that he splits time and has been hurt, and the fact that OSU is under the off-the-field microscope the last 2 seasons, in addition to his responsibility for getting in trouble. I like the kid, he has shown flashes of great talent, though it's been somewhat sporadic, and if he can put it all together this season, they'll have him out there a lot, because they need him. I want to read articles out there about how our punishing fullback is they key to overcoming our losses at tailback and having a big year running the ball...not about the other stuff. With any luck, that will happen. My point was only that I'm glad he's not happy about being hurt and down on the depth chart, I want him to want to play every down and lay the beatdown on some people, which it looks like he does...it shows aggression and the desire to excel, which we need from everyone this season.

Neither do I and that's why I didn't give you any. If I give you negative rep it will effect your rep points a lot as I have a pretty high rep myself. Also, I will sign it "-BitB" so you'll know it was from me.

I got a negative rep for my post too... should I assume that was you?

Re-reading your post with the understanding that you hadn't yet read the article I see where you were coming from. BTW... I didn't sign up for the dispatch either... I used a name and password from www.bugmenot.com

We're on the same page here. Sorry if I seemed like I was attacking... it was just my misunderstanding of both what you said and what 44820 meant by the thread title.

How does this work? I put in the URL and the results were:

goobergrape

When you go to the Dispatch site, it asks for an e-mail address, not user ID.
