FB Branden Joe (official thread)

I'd love to see it but I don't really see him getting more than 4 or 5 carries a game. JT likes to use the fullback in the I to block so unless he's revamped the whole offensive scheme I don't think we'll see it. I loved the way Joe ran the ball against KSU though - reminded me of Barry Foster with the Steelers. Great explosion through the hole, and we almost never saw that with any of the other backs.
With the way he ran against KSt he better see the ball more then 4 times a game. he was just brutal. I don't know how he would do against a fresh D, but against a worn down (2nd half) D he can dominate. I for one would love 5 yards a carry right up the gut. If we can do that we WILL be undefeated this year.

No, I think 4-6 carries a game is perfect. If even that many. At tOSU, a fullback's job is to block. If he does that 90% of the time, then the 10% when he actually carries the ball will also carry the element of surprise. Now, keep in mind, this is contingent upon either Ross, Pittman, or Haw (or any combination of the above) having a stellar year. If nobody else can get the job done, and Joe can, than have at it.

I wouldn't mind seeing it, BUT I think basing our assumption on how good he is in the TB spot is a bit off just based on one game. I think this kind of applies to a lot of players....

Sure he did look great in the Fiesta Bowl.... but don't you think if he was THAT good - our all knowing GOD of football (all hail Tress!) would have played him there earlier and longer? I do.

I think we (including me "sometimes") tend to HOPE that the player we saw make one amazing play or dazzle us in practice or scrimmage is going to be the next star. I don't think it usually works that way.

All that being said, I think Joe has an important role on this team. I just don't see it as a featured TB. I would like 5 carries out of the FB role. Or maybe 1-2 carries out of a single back, 3 wide formation and see what happens.

Am I the only one here that would love to see Brandon Joe get some more carries this season? He strikes me as the type of bruiser that will get stronger as the game goes on, and one that will wear down a defense. He demonstrated his ability to run the ball in the Fiesta bowl, I wonder if he'll be called upon more often this season.

Just thinking out loud, what do you all think?
My opinion is that if Lydell has problems getting out of the gate this season we will have no choice but to give Brandon the ball more.

I thought the Fiesta Bowl was the first game back where he was truly healthy. Same thing with Ross. Just because they played earlier in the year doesn't mean they were 100%. We had absolutely nobody healthy in the backfield last year, so having a 80% (just a guess here) Ross/Joe was better then 100% of nobody.

I was going to say the same thing AnnArbor. I don't want to root against Joe but if he plays TB it will be out of necessity and that - IMO - will not be a positive for the team. My preference would be to read that he had gained 20 pounds and was getting ready for a monster year at FB.

what you think

Hey do you guys think that Joe will be used as a lone back so that he could be used in two ways 1) He will be a great blocker if they want to bring someone off the edge and 2) if they don't respect his running power and they play the pass then he'll pretty much in be able to run for around 5 yards a carry given the offensive line just gets in the way of some people cuz I don't see anyone bringing down joe with just one on one.

Trimmed Down Brandon Joe

I'm intrigued to learn he's down to 235. I hope a 0.5 step faster, to go along with the faster O-line, too.

Our old nemesis (Bo S) said it best, "It's all about blocking and tackling." If the Brandon can block and get into position to make a block, this offense will be exciting!

Bottom line, though, 8 guys in the box will have to be punished. If OSU's offense can't make that happen, it won't matter how good BJ has become.

Joe resumes leadership without title

The nagging pain in Branden Joe’s ankle likely is nothing compared with the nagging question in his mind of why he was not named an Ohio State captain.
This blurb was on dispatch.com, anyone know whats up with Joe? Please dont tell me he is upset about not being named a captain.....someone tell him that he needs to stay out of trouble off the field to gain the teams respect.

I've seen him listed third on the depth chart...if he WAS happy, I'd say there was something wrong with him. If he lets his play do the talking (for a change) he'll be fine.

He's only third because he's hurt... he'll be starting next week. Get off his back. :roll2:

He has let his play do the talking in the past and he will in the future. He is one of the best pass catching and running FBs we've had in a long time.

"(Injuries are) frustrating and it’s almost like I have a camp curse on me," Joe said. "But I try to stick it out. I try to stay as close to my teammates as possible, whether I’m participating in camp or . . . cheerleading on the sidelines. I try to be a leader in any situation."

The captaincy was not his to have. Nor, except for one brief burst, has he experienced much personal glory.

There’s still time, but it’s down to 11 games. "I definitely haven’t put everything together yet in my career," Joe said. "I’m looking forward to putting it together this year."
Re-read what HE said vs. what was said by a writer... I think you are putting words in his mouth. He wanted to be captain... he's not... he'll live. PLAY BALL!

I think the reason why he's not in the 2-deep is that ankle is still bothering him.

It's a long season and we're going to need him for the meat of our schedule. With all due respect to Marshall and Cincy, I'd hold Joe out until at least the we play a tougher opponent (NCSU game).
