Favorite song by a female singer/band

Barracuda by Heart. Yes, I'm old. :tongue2:

Can't stand her personally, but I could listen to her sing any time - Barbra Streisand - especially her '60s stuff.

Ella Fitzgerald was the best singer ever.

Ann Wilson from Heart
Pat Benetar
Kate Bush and Tori Amos - I wouldn't normally like their voices that much, but they really fit their songs, and Amos has some great songs.
Dusty Springfield - a couple of the best recording ever, like "The Look of Love"
Annie Haslam from Renaissance
Evanescence - great vocals
Roberta Flack - "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"
Paula Cole - "I Am So Ordinary" from her debut album
Leann Rimes

Some good picks there, Nightmare. I love Ella Fitzgerald. Also love Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn and especially Nina Simone.

I also have to second the votes for Tori Amos and Paula Cole.

I've been on quite a kick of female singers and female-led bands lately. Some have been mentioned so far, others haven't, but I really like Sarah McLachlan, Loreena McKennitt, Indigo Girls, Julianna Hatfield and bands like The Cardigans, Garbage and Portishead, among many, many others.

Still have to go with Aimee Mann as my recent favorite, though.

I second most everything Peach said, and add Norah Jones & Fiona Apple to the mix. If I had to pick a song right this instant:

Fiona Apple - I Know

("So be it, I'm your crowbar,
that's what I am so far,
until you get out of this mess.
And I will pretend that I don't know of your sins,
until you are ready to confess.
But all the time, all the time, I'll know.)

White rabbit -Jefferson Airplane because it reminds me of Fear and Loathing

Etta James -At last is probably the sexiest song by a woman I have heard though, next to Trina of course
