On my list of really well made horror movies roughly in reverse order --

An American Werewolf in London - great special effects for its day.
(Jennifer Agutter gets undressed).

Psycho - the original and only worthwhile version

Alien - the 1st movie that literally had me jumping from my seat in a long while, got beast for dinner?

Nightmare on Elm Street - deserves mention because of its originality

The Shining - this got panned by critics because A) it didn't stick to King's book at the end (Anyone who saw the more faithful made-for-TV remake knows how wise Kubrick was to take editing shears to King's cartoonish final chapter excesses). and because B) Nicholson - wait for it - over-acted! Shock, horror. Truth is this film grabs you right from the very beginning - the overhead shot driving through the Pine Forest to the tune of the Witches is unnerving, in and of itself.

i was just going to mention this one, stuckbuck. as well, i'm not sure that it would scare me nearly as much now, but i found it frightful when i was younger. clowns and carnivals will always be scary. considering the root history of clowns, it's no surprise.

Night of the Living Dead
The Omen
The Exorcist

I watched these when I was young. I didn't sleep the entire night after watching Night of the Living Dead. My bedroom was in the basement, and I swear to god I could see the fucking zombies coming through the backyards to the sliding glass doors. :paranoid:

I can't think of a single great horror movie I have seen in the last ten years. I hated The Ring. It seemed like a bunch of non-sensical drivel to me. Signs/The Sixth Sense were decent, but certainly not good enough to keep me awake at night.

I've been meaning to find Audition, but I forget everytime I go to a video place. Maybe, I subconciously don't want to see it. From what I've seen, it's all kinds of fucked up. Crazy Japanese horror movies.

the spiders in the bedroom was what got me the most. and everytime that leader of the carnival said "young jim nightshade" still gives me the creeps.

Movie Name

seen as i am still pretty young, i have never really seen that many films that really scare me other than just use the element of surprise. my dad though can sit through pretty much any movie, but he told me he was watching tv one night and this movie scared the crap out of him. basically all i remember is that he said it had a couple of hunters and each one gets knocked off. anyone ever seen a movie like this before?

The only movie to ever make me somewhat nervous was The Ring. I have never been scared in a movie before, and the only time I jump is when a girl screams and grabs my hand/arm...then I jump

I have never seen that movie but all of my friends have told me to. WHY?? I have a hand dug well under my 100 year old house.

I guess that plays a part in the movie.

I tell my wife I want to rent it but she doesn't want to watch it.

If you don't get scared by supernatural movies then it wont be scary as it is very farfetched; however, when i left the theatre i thought it was one of the scariest movies i had ever seen. They do a very good job of using disturbing images that under normal circumstances would not be scary at all.
