Great

There are so many great songs and artists mentioned here. It always amazes me that so many people have so much muscial talent and creativity. That is except me. I love music however. I don't know if this was mentioned, but what about:

Lynryd Skynrd and Free Bird
Blackfoot and Train, Train
BTO and Roll on Down the Highway
the guy from Cheap Trick
Doobie Brothers and "China Grove
Eagles Life in the Fast Lane
Molly Hatchet and Gator Country
Rolling Stones and Satisfaction
Steve Miller the Joker
Van Halen---anything but I love Poundcake
ZZ top

Dang there are so many and the ones already mentioned.

Some of the guitar riffs that I like best are catchy hooks, rather than hot licks.

I guess my favorite is anything by Michael Hedges. His influence on guitarists from Van Halen to David Crosby is very much unrecognized

[ame="http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3795547535025238134"]Michael Hedges - Because it's there[/ame]

His All Along the Watchtower is another favorite, but these old youtube videos don't really do him justice...

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs0rKW2jqMU"]YouTube - Michael Hedges - All Along the Watchtower[/ame]

A few others, some not so much for hot licks but rather for memorable rifts...

Layla (Derek and the Domino's)
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (Allman Brothers)
Carry on My Wayward Son (Kansas)
Revelations (Santana)
Purple Haze, All Along the Watchtower, Star Spangled Banner (Jimi Hendrix)
Keep on Rockin' in the Free World (Neil Young)
Because It's There (Michael Hedges)

Wooden Ships (Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young but the original with Crosby, Stills and the Jefferson Airplane version with Buckeye Jorma Kokounen on lead guitar)

The drum riff from the long version of In A Gadda Da Vida was a right of passage in puberty

but that made me think of how good Angus Young is on things like You Shook Me... Angus Keeps it simple... but its sometimes real good.

Rock 'n' Roll at it's best.

My other personal favorite is Keith Richards on Honky Tonk Woman. Again, simple but perfect. I guess that summer he let Gram Parsons crash on his couch was worth it for that lick.

Inferno - Smphony X (way to lead off an album with two of my favorite guitar riffs of all time) not only the opening riff, but the ones 50 sec in... \m/ That's some damn good metal.

If you wanna talk riff based music, for my money, it's hard to beat Jimi Hendrix' Band of Gypsies album, especially Who Knows?, and Machine Gun. Just bad ass groves, I wish he could have done more recordings with that lineup. There's a Zeppelin track on the BBC recordings called The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair, which is bad ass. Just a simple two bar riff over a blues form, but they play it so nasty. The original recording of Kiling Floor by Howling Wolf is classic (the fast parts of Zep's Lemon Song). The beginning of Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground is sick (as are a lot of White Stripes songs). Zep, AC/DC, and ZZ Top are always good for some sick riffs.

Some notable riffs that I haven't seen mentioned:

Beatles: Day Tripper; Lady Madonna; I Want You (she's so heavy); Dig a Pony; Helter Sketler; Revolution; etc.

Badfinger: No Matter What

Free: All Right Now

The Clash: Should I Stay or Should I Go; Guns of Brixton; (many more, I recently re-discovered the album London Calling, fucking great)

Stones: Brown Sugar; etc.

Pink Floyd: Money

Richie Valens: La Bamba

War: Low Rider; Spill the Wine

I could go on and on...
