LOS ANGELES (WCMH) – A famous California Buckeye fan is excited to see the team play right in his own backyard.
Central Ohio native JK Simmons won the 2014 Academy Award for best supporting actor for the film Whiplash. Thursday, he talked with NBC4’s Jerod Smalley about his love of the Buckeyes.
“I get a fair amount of random, you know, walking through the mall, O-H,” said Simmons.
Simmons bleeds scarlet and gray. He grew up in Worthington and graduated from Thomas Worthington High School. He also briefly attended Ohio State.
“We moved to Ohio from that state up north when I was 10 years old. My dad had a job at Ohio State in the music department. Started taking me to the games when I was 11, 12, all through junior high,” said Simmons. “In high school, I was in the stands for most of the home games. I had to arm wrestle my mom for the tickets once in a while. She liked to go and watch the marching band at halftime.”
Smalley asked Simmons what he would say to the team, understanding the emotion and meaning of the game.
“All you gotta say is, ‘Do this for Urban, do this for each other.’ That’s my speech right there,” said Simmons.
