F Rodney Hood (transfer to Duke)

Ohio State coaches are still known to be recruiting at least one more addition to their 2012 class, 6-8 wing Rodney Hood, who is transferring from Mississippi State, where he started as a freshman last season. But Hood has not yet scheduled a visit to campus, according to a source. He is a friend and former AAU teammate of Ohio State freshman LaQuinton Ross.

The last I heard from anyone in Hood's circle was a week ago, when his father, Ricky, texted me that Rodney was interested in taking a visit to Ohio State but had not scheduled it.

Ohio State men's basketball: Hood to make visit on weekend
By Todd Jones
The Columbus Dispatch
Tuesday May 8, 2012

The Ohio State men?s basketball program will host an official recruiting visit this weekend for Rodney Hood, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward who is transferring from Mississippi State.

An OSU source confirmed a Rivals.com report yesterday that said the school is scheduled to host Hood, who started 29 games last season for the Bulldogs. He averaged 10.3 points and 4.8 rebounds as one of the top freshmen in the Southeastern Conference.

Rated as a top-30 prospect in the class of 2011, Hood announced last month that he was transferring after Rick Stansbury retired as Mississippi State?s coach and was replaced by Rick Ray on April 1.

Hood would sit out next season because of NCAA transfer rules and have three years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2013-14 season. The native of Meridian, Miss., played on the same AAU team in high school with Ohio State freshman LaQuinton Ross, and they remain friends.

Quiet in the Hood

The spring signing period for basketball ended last night. That one-month window in which a prospect could sign a national letter of intent for the 2012-13 season had no impact on transfers' decisions, though.

This does: Starting today and continuing through May 26 is a "dead period" for recruiting, meaning prospects, including transfers such as Rodney Hood, can not make official or unofficial visits to schools during that time.

So, apparently it will be awhile longer before we find out where the Mississippi State transfer enrolls next. He hasn't responded to text inquiries asking where he's visiting and when. Neither, lately, has his father, Ricky, since he called a few weeks ago to say his son's list of visits would be released after Rodney finished the semester at Mississippi State on April 26.

To give everyone an idea of the impact Hood could have, NBAdraft.net pegs him as the 6th pick of their 2013 Mock. Obviously that won't happen if he has to sit out a year... but interesting nonetheless.

#16 overall (#5 SF) in the nation in the 2011 class (Rivals).

Kid averaged averaged 33 minutes a game in the SEC averaging 10 and 5 as a freshman. Impact player.

There's a big hole at the PF position and Rodney would be a great fit down there. I see Sullinger as a PF/C so he and Spoon leaving is a big reduction in space eaters for us. Rodney would have to sit out a year but the following year we could be totally stacked with Love coming in, Williams with lots of experience and his AAU teammate terrorizing the wings in Ross. I would also say it would be Crafts senior year but that might be overly optimistic.

Now you have woken me up. Since Hood has not selected a college as of yet, I wonder if he might be thinking about playing overseas for a year and then being drafted. Stranger things have happened but this is probably just crazy thinking on my part:)

It is interesting to see a potential first round pick who is already draft eligible looking to make a two year commitment via transfer. Would love to land him, but this could be an interesting journey.

Rodney's a 2/3. Wing player. Not a PF.

I believe he is visiting Duke this weekend or very soon. I think this is an tOSU/Duke battle.
