F Chris Jent (Former Assistant BBall Coach)

March 23, 2013
From LeBron James to Buckeyes, a Coach Brings His Shooting Touch
By ZACH SCHONBRUN

DAYTON, Ohio ? When second-seeded Ohio State bulldozed Iona in its West Region opener Friday, shooting 48 percent from the floor, one Buckeyes assistant took no small amount of personal satisfaction.

Chris Jent, in his second season on Thad Matta?s coaching staff, is Ohio State?s shooting guru. His credentials ? a former Ohio State star, 10 years playing professionally, 8 seasons coaching in the N.B.A. ? appear almost impeccable.

But there is one notation that especially stands out to the players: for four years, from 2007 to 2010, Jent was the personal shooting coach for LeBron James.

?Yeah, that qualifies him,? guard Aaron Craft joked.

As an assistant coach and director of player development with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Jent worked out daily with James, playing the role of a personal trainer who would show up whenever James called. And he would call a lot.

?Anywhere he went, I went with him,? Jent said. ?We worked on everything.?

Yes, I'd hate to see Ohio State lose him; but the Rutgers job would be a great career advancement for him. I hope he gets it. However, the latest (rumor) report I've seen doesn't mention him:

Hurley a favorite for Rutgers job

Might another Hurley wind up with a new job soon? The early favorite for the Rutgers position is Rhode Island coach and former Scarlet Knights assistant Dan Hurley, 40. Other options are James Madison coach and South Jersey native Matt Brady, 45; and Geoff Billet, 36, who starred at Rutgers and was an assistant at Monmouth and Seton Hall before his current success as a high school coach at Christian Brothers Academy. Rice replaced Brady as a St. Joseph's assistant in 2004 after Brady took the head coaching job at Marist. Hawks head coach Phil Martelli, whose son Jimmy worked under Rice at Rutgers, declined to comment through an athletic department spokeswoman.

Rutgers would be extremely foolish not to hire Hurley IMO; nobody has connections like him with the NJ coaches. But of course, that almost makes too much sense. Chris will get his HC spot soon though, can't expect him not to take a step up in a year or two.

A little HC experience won't hurt him, so about the time Matta sees fit to end his 50 year stint Jent can move right in.
:oh:

If my feeble memory is correct, Jent served as interim NBA HC for a while. Notice this year he is the one who draws up many plays late in the game.
