more…COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Chris Jent's official return to the Ohio State basketball bench will begin on April 25.
Ohio State confirmed the hiring of Jent, long-expected after reports of his return surfaced last week, on Thursday morning. Buckeyes head coach Thad Matta will speak with the media on Thursday afternoon.
Matta hasn't decided on coaching responsibilities yet. He said he'd get cracking on that when the staff gets together next Monday after recruiting this weekend.
When Jent left he had been running the Buckeyes offense for two seasons, and the Buckeyes finished in the top 11 in the country in KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency both times. That offensive coordinator job has been held by Greg Paulus since. Ohio State had its worst offensive season under Matta last year, the second-worst season was in 2013-14 (according to KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency) -- the year after Jent left.
Those offensive dips also coincide with some pretty important player departures, but Jent could give the Buckeyes offense a jolt if Matta decides to shuffle the coaching responsibilities.
"Chris has a great basketball mind," Matta said. "He likes offense, he likes the skill instruction. Chris is also a guy that will do whatever we need him to do."
I know I recently posted this one. This man, in his short time here has impacted my life on so many levels. Just wanted to take this time to say Thank you Coach Jent. Mad we didn't get a final shootout though
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Chris Jent, the former Ohio State basketball and Cavaliers assistant coach, has landed back in the NBA.
The Atlanta Hawks on Friday announced that they've hired Jent as an assistant coach on head coach Mike Budenholzer's staff.
"Chris is a great fit with our coaching staff. Player development is at the core of our basketball program and he has a track record of improving players' skill level and understanding of the game at every level," Budenholzer said in a statement. "His experiences as a coach and former player will add to our group."
Jent, an Ohio State alum, returned to the Buckeyes last year for his second stint as an assistant under previous coach Thad Matta. When Matta was fired in June, Jent interviewed for the Buckeyes head coaching position that eventually went to former Butler coach Chris Holtmann.
