Eye of the Tiger
In about one months time our boys in scarlet and gray will be lining up against what is arguably the best team in CFB, with a leader at QB, who may be the best player in the nation and next Heisman Trophy winner. Early odds makers have the talented Longhorns as a 10.5 point favorite when they face off under the lights in what should be a beautiful night to play football.
Despite our success in recent Fiesta Bowls no one is giving us much of a chance to come away with a victory out in the land of the sun. Our team is playing eye of the tiger in the mind of some.
Eye of the tiger. Kinda like when Buster Douglas fought Mike Tyson in the memorable boxing championship bout in Japan. Eye of the tiger. Kinda like when the United States Olympic Hockey team faced the Soviets in 1980. Eye of the tiger. Kinda like when Villanova played Georgetown in the NCAA Basketball finals. Eye of the tiger. Kinda like when Upset faced off against the mighty Man O War in the Sanford Memorial. Eye of the tiger. Kinda like when the Mets faced the Orioles in the 1969 World Series. Eye of the tiger. Kinda like THE OHIO STATE'S triple overtime contest against MIAMI in the NC game. EYE OF THE TIGER.
Eye of the tiger. Perhaps. But one thing that odds makers may be overlooking is that this is not the same team that played against then #1 USC in the L.A. Colossium earlier this year. Or even the same team that faced the then #3 team Penn State Nittany Lions. Much has changed since then. First, we will have a healthy BEANIE Wells. If there was ever a difference maker it's a healthy #28. Second, our Freshman QB will have nearly a year of play under his belt. A guy that seems to learn from every game and every play. This month of preparation will contribute significantly to his progress. Third, an Offense that is starting to come together, averaging nearly 40 pts a game in it's final 3 games. Fourth, a Defense that has given up an average of only 10 pts. a game over the past six games.
Eye of the tiger. That's what they say anyway. They may be right. We'll see come January 5th. Methinks that there may be some people who will be in for a rude awakening. Will we win? The odds say no. But then again, that did not discourage Buster Douglas, the US Olympic Hockey team, Villanova, Upset, the Met's OR our beloved OHIO STATE BUCKEYES who faced greater odds in the very same stadium when it faced the unbeatable Miami Hurricanes.
