Ex-Minnesota Coach Tubby Smith (official thread)

IMO, Kentucky won't pursue Matta much at all. They will try their hardest to get Donovan. If they can't get Donovan they'd welcome Petino back with open arms. After that, it's up in the air. Mark Few would be nice though!:wink2:

According to sources, Marquette coach Tom Crean, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Memphis coach John Calipari, Gonzaga's Mark Few and Notre Dame's Mike Brey are expected to be candidates for what is one of the few premier jobs in men's college basketball.

If you ask me, some of these names are laughable. I don't think Izzo, JC would take the job. Maybe the others...
Calipari maybe, but Izzo? I can't imagine that possibly happening.

Word is, this is the coach most Kentucky fans are wanting as a replacement:

I never thought I would see an all-white basketball team again. :wink2:

Wow....Minnesota is a good place for Tubby-he is not a recruiting machine, but the Gopher faithful will apreciate him building teams that will simply get to the tournament....the Gophs better just hope he works out better than the last coach they hired w/ Kentucky roots.....Clem Haskins.....

Calipari and Donovan are probably #1 and #2 on the wishlist of the Wildcat faithful-and in fairness to the Wildcat fans, Tubby should have recruited better-I'm glad he saved the university the PR mess of canning him

Hey, hey-UK won 2 national titles in the 90's-and was a whisker from the FF two years ago-let's not drink the haterade for the Wildcats-no one deserves the ND comparison-also, UK has an entire state of lunatics following them-ND has a whole bandwagon...

"Kentucky will go after a big-name coach. Florida's Billy Donovan will certainly be pursued, but other guys who will be mentioned for one of the most attractive jobs in America are Villanova's Jay Wright, Marquette's Tom Crean, Memphis' John Calipari, Texas' Rick Barnes, Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie and Ohio State's Thad Matta."

I don't see Calipari, Matta, Izzo (mentioned elsewhere), or Donovan leaving their current jobs. I'd say the most likely candidates on this list are Wright and Gillispie.

FWIW, UK fans are delusional--they think that if they don't win the title every year (their clear lack of talent every year notwithstanding), then their coach is a failure.

no doubt. in the last 20 years notre dame has a title and robbed out of another one (93). theyve played bcs bowls recently also.

its a storied program. just one that their fans are mildly delusional in my view. uk basketball isnt the same to me as it is to a 17 year old kid thats for sure. thats my point.

Not true. I think they are sick of seeing their elite program go nearly a DECADE without a final four appearance. Other than winning a NC (with an NBA team compliments of Petino), Tubby did nothing special at all. Kentucky is one of the few elite programs in college basketball and Tubby simply couldn't keep them at that level. Nothing more, nothing less. Tubby was an average coach and an absolutely horrible recruiter.
