Ex-Minnesota Coach Tubby Smith (official thread)

UK would be stupid not to at least try to get Matta, but the only thing they can offer him that tOSU can't is being the most cared about program at the school or state for that matter. I doubt he goes anywhere.

I would expect Billy Donovan to be at the top of their wish list.

Personally, I think Matta sees the benefits of football being king at Ohio State as a total positive. It absorbs most of the pressure and "nutjob fans" that would fixate on him at a place like KY or IN. Seeing as there's no difference in his ability to recruit, facilities or salary, why go to a place like Kentucky where the fanbase will demonize you and run you into the ground the minute he fails to live up to their outsized expectations.

I know its completely implausible, but I really hope they go after Pitino.

not that far fetched. i talked to half a dozen or so guys at the bar in between the sessions thurs and that name came up.

the reality is rupp is a hole. its big and loug. its a hole. the place is over 30 years old and really could use some money dumped into it cuz its never had it happen. tradition is great. but they kids you have coming in now were in diapers when uk was last a solid basketball team. that is harder to sell sometimes than a "hot program"

should be interesting who they pick.

tubby to minnesota is interesting also. i always thought he was overrated. good ingame coach, not great. and recruiting wise ive seen better.

ESPN

According to sources, Marquette coach Tom Crean, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Memphis coach John Calipari, Gonzaga's Mark Few and Notre Dame's Mike Brey are expected to be candidates for what is one of the few premier jobs in men's college basketball.

If you ask me, some of these names are laughable. I don't think Izzo, JC would take the job. Maybe the others...

I also agree with the Pitino angle... would be interesting to see if they go after him.

While I agree with your assessment of Tubby I think that their recent "mediocrity" is more due to Tubby than the program. If they get a hot/well-known coach in there (Izzo, Calipari, Donovan, Pitino) the athletes will come back and we'll see the Wildcats in the Sweet 16 in the next few years.

Mention was made in that same ESPN article of Billy Donovan possibly being approached.

I don't know which is stranger Tubby walking from Kentucky before he is made to run, or his taking the gig with the 9-22 (Big Ten 3-13) Gophers.
