ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

  • Still defending throwing themselves into any of the political arguments of the day.
  • Still too stupid to realize that people turn to sports as a means to avoid politics - the news in general.
  • They should stop production of "Wake UP"
  • They should get out of their MNF and NBA contracts, if it is at all possible
  • No more political discussion on any show. Period.
  • No more screaming head debate shows. Period.
  • Go back to their roots - sportscenter with scores/highlights and quality coverage of obscure/interesting sports.

1. Won't happen because Disney.
2. Won't happen. They think they have found something that transcends sports.
3. Won't happen because Disney.
4. Won't happen but should and might once both are up.
5. Won't happen because Disney.
6. In this they are copying all of the political news channels. They think drama sells.
7. I really wish this would happen - Charley Steiner, Keith Olbermann, Dan Patrick, Kenny Mayne - all of these guys were awesome to watch before school.

I’m sure this isn’t an opinion shared by many others, But I actually enjoy many of their sporting telecasts, including baseball and their college football.

The one to watch was Craig Kilborne. He actually made it funny.

I understand why people clamor for them to go to a scores-and-highlights-only model, but that wouldn't have any significant effect on their ratings or subscriber numbers. It's 2018, anyone can find scores and highlights for any game and sport they want in 30 seconds. It might make some people more likely to have ESPN on as background noise if it was OG SportsCenter instead of Stephen A., but no one's keeping a cable subscription just to watch a highlight show.

If anything, they're going to have to do that eventually just because it's probably a lot cheaper than producing whatever bullshit they throw money at now.

I can't express how surprised I am that Fox News is critical of another media outlet for taking politically moderate or liberal positions.

The piece on Fox is a linked Wall Street Journal article that seemingly requires a subscription to read in full. Not that I disagree with them, but how many of your bullet points are directly from the article and how many are your take based on the article?

Others will arise...
Those "others" would be derivatives from major networks like NBC and CBS, and we'd be down this road again, most likely. Networks(and media entertainment in general) don't like reaching to reinvent the wheel, and with the technology of smart phones moving at such a rapid pace, and people using alternative methods to get their TV fix, another version of ESPN woul just pop up on another network

Maybe, maybe not.

6. Ratings have proven time and again that it does. I tune out, but apparently there's 2 idiots for every one of me.

This part isnt new for Espn either... going strobg since at least 2005, and im sure before that.

Espn has some similarities to Mtv in that respect. Mtv completely divested its original purpose, but both have forsaken their acronyms for cheap gambits in the name of ratings.

Also the irony of Fox complaining about pot-stirring politics for ratings.

Things changed around the 2000 Election time frame. ESPN started started going towards more of the mainstream news services (remember, this is when Fox News was destroying everyone in the ratings) - so they absolutely copied the model.

The thing is sports has generally been the respite from that. Some of the audience (much like you and me) don't need to see that when we want to see our sports coverage instead. This has a lot to do with ESPN's struggles on Sportscenter or Wokecenter or whatever. Mike and Mike had crossover appeal but generally it was related to sports but when they tried to crossover, it never went to the point that they were discussing huge societal issues. Like I said, nothing that ESPN needs to happen will because of Disney running things, but as the cord cutting movement continues more or less unabated, you can expect their ratings to continue to tank for all but live sports.

As for Fox pointing something out - even a broken clock can be right sometimes and all that....
