ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

A couple of points:

If Mark May AND Beth Mowins were canned, a significant percentage of things that irritate me would be taken care of. I’ll take what I can get tho.

While I have realized the problems OSU fans have with ESPN, I still watched their college sports programs and a few other shows. If you look at what FS1, CBS Sports channel, etc. offer up, it’s a lot of things I’m not interested in like UFC, soccer, motorcycle racing, etc. So, I have stuck with ESPN despite some of the things that are problems in relation to the Buckeyes.

But I believe how they have been provocative toward a lot of schools in order to attract clicks and eyeballs has backfired on them. If you are a major program, your message boards have threads just like this one. If you have had a scandal, and experienced some inaccurate and unfair reporting, those schools hate ESPN too. I think they have just alienated too many people with that stuff.

I find those articles about how they are approaching the intersection of sports and politics very interesting. I wrote them on that subject 6 months ago, and warned them that I am tired of having my senses insulted and assaulted every time one of these sports/political issues is presented. For someone of my political bent, shows like OTL and the Sports Reporters are infuriating and nauseating. I suggested that they just do sports, or that they get balanced when they do political issues, but that I am close to the end of my tolerance of what they are doing. I have some understanding of a wide range of business models, but I am unaware of any that aims to piss off half of its potential audience.

IMO, this crap comes from Disney, who, if you name the leftist cultural value, they are pushing it – and have been for a long time. My wife and I watched Good Morning America for almost 25 years. I didn’t feel assaulted and insulted when David Hartman and Joan Lunden were doing that show. The show gradually got more bold with their bias, but I can take that, but then it really exploded when Disney bought ABC. Finally, about 5 years ago, I got sick of being attacked every morning as basically everything I believe was being ridiculed, lied about, etc. I finally said to my wife, “Why are we watching this crap?” She said, “Let’s stop.” I have much better mornings now.

When Fox Sports gets its act together and starts a daily CFB show, a weekly recruiting show, and basically creates alternatives to what ESPN provides, I will never watch ESPN again (except for game broadcasts). BTN could do way more than they are doing. They could step out their rigid format, offer more interesting programming, allow a little controversy with a debate show, maybe have a call-in show, etc. It would be a lot more interesting and entertaining, and, therefore, worth my time. FWIW

How long is the text to your wife when you want to let her know you're on the way home or something like that?

ESPN President John Skipper is like Nigel Tufnel and Joe Paterno.

...I'd have left college after my 2nd year. That's all that kept my interest as the actual education part was fairly easy.
...the statue, which will feature Paterno sitting on a bench reading Virgil's "Aeneid,"...

Actually, and I know it’s hard to believe, but my texts at the end of the day tend to be: “Leaving. Be home in 10.”

I have a buddy who has a daughter playing college basketball, and he is a huge lib, and so if he is upset about his daughter’s basketball experience OR he is going on a rant about Trump, I get these texts that go on and on and on and on. So, I can relate to how you feel about what I do to you. Lol.

But this has been a problem for a while. I have my 35th HS reunion coming up so I have been thinking about those days. I was in an advanced English class in grades 7-9. We wrote and wrote and wrote. My poor teacher used to write one comment in red ink more than any other: “TOO WORDY!” Imagine that.

Don't watch ESPN except for live games. But it's on in my gym.

I can't get into the female sportscasters. They are just there to balance out the genders.
I tend to generally agree. I think Rachel Nichols was decent, and I've always enjoyed Suzy Kolber. Aside from that, I don't like many of the current ESPN anchors. Sage Steele ruined any hope of ever respecting her when she cut off Win Butler after a celebrity all star basketball game, because (as a Canadian) he was speaking of the healthcare system they have. Now ESPN is allowed to go balls deep into politics. Amazing how they back-peddled on that stance.

One of e!spn's major shortcomings is its website, IMO. Any decent article on their site requires an "insider" subscription. I don't know what that entails, but it's a shit business model. I'm not signing up for their stupid site just to read the same shit I can just click on over at SI. Fuck them.

From the time that they chose to attack Ohio State, repeating known falsehoods, in order to get fan eyeballs from other teams...It was clear that their business model would fail over the longer term.

Hey Trevor and Mark, how did that work out for you? What's your personal job prospects look like now?

Not clicking but what exactly is the relationship between sports and politics? Do I blame Obama or Trump for the offensive woes the last two seasons?
Jesse Owens at the German Olympics. Jackie Robinson. Mohamed Ali. Those three guys who raised their fists during the national anthem at the Olympics. The miracle on ice and fighting Soviet hockey dominance. Bobby Fischer fighting Soviet chess dominance. Colin Kaepernick and whoever else taking a knee during the national anthem. Ummm, the first Yankees game after 9/11. The first sports events in Boston after the marathon bombing.

Other examples I can't think of off the top of my head.

Fuck ESPN, I haven't watched outside of games in almost a decade, but there are some pretty clear examples.

I don't think the issue is that they cover the clear connection between sports and social/political issues that occur sometimes- it's that they do it in the same bullshit manner they cover everything else.

May it all burn.

Well, yeah, but do you remember when you could only watch about half the Ohio State games in a season?

I remember when teams were limited to one or two games a year and many 's the time the only chance you had to see the Buckeyes for the year was the Michigan game. ABC and then ESPN changed the way we enjoy college, and especially Buckeye, football today. The problem with 24/7 anything is that there's a limited amount of product that will attract enough viewers to meet the cost. So, be careful of what you wish for with ESPN, you just might get your wish.

This has nothing to do with politics, sports watchers or even shitty ESPN. Most people who watch live sports still have cable. A LOT of people who don't give a shit about sports have dropped cable in favor of netflix, hulu, hbo, amazon, etc. Since ESPN was on every basic cable package in the country, they are losing a buck per cord cutter.

That may not last either. You can get a pretty complete sports package included in your lineup on Playstation Vue for @ $35/month.
