It only took about 20 years, but McDonough finally finds himself back on the mountaintop after his meteoric rise at CBS landed him the 1992 World Series (he had the pbp on Joe Carter's home run in the 1993 WS), yet a few years later he moved to ESPN after the ABC/ESPN merger and found himself back at the bottom doing noon Big Ten football and night owl Big East college basketball on ESPN2 and (then) ESPN+ affiliate networks.

ESPN named Sean McDonough its new play-by-play man for “Monday Night Football” on Monday, an hour after NBC said Mike Tirico will start there on July 1 after 25 years at ESPN — the last 10 calling its Monday night NFL games.

Calling the job “the dream of a lifetime,” McDonough grew emotional during a conference call to announce his new assignment, especially when he spoke of his late father, Will, a famed football writer and a pioneer for writers appearing on TV.

McDonough said calling it a job he “would ‘welcome’ isn’t a strong enough word.” Rather, it is one he “would just about kill for.”

ESPN is stuck in the cable versus on demand war. That's Disney's fault and their stock price is paying for their mishandling of ESPN.
In the mean time ESPN is cutting their name reporters to save money. I guess Disney figures they have a "captive" audience in ESPN viewers.
It just makes them "look stupid again". It's a short term "fix" for a corporate problem.
Maybe they could just hire a bunch of young, hot women to be reporters?

The eye candy approach went obsolete when everyone starting doing it. Did anyone ever tune into an ESPN broadcast simply because Erin Andrews was going to be on? Ok, maybe this one guy in Nashville.....

I've never tuned in to watch a game that I didn't have a vested interest in base solely on who was commentating. I have turned a game off because of who was broadcasting it though.

If they're bleeding cash so badly, maybe instead of having 14 people on their 4 hour long pre-game show, maybe get back to the days of two guys talking about each game and various matchups for that day......
