ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

I'll never understand the attempt to diminish Saban's accomplishments at MSU.

He took over in 1995 amid scandal after Coach Perles was fired, AD Merrily Dean Baker resigned, and the NCAA was investigating reports of grade fixing and no-show classes. From 91-94, Perles had gone 3-8, 5-6, 6-6, and 4-5 at the point of his termination in November, though the 94 record was changed to 0-12 since all the games were subsequently forfeited. According to players' parents at that time, the 92 & 93 seasons probably should have been forfeit as well. The NCAA actually showed mercy.

MSU's first choice to replace Perles was Tom Osborne (lol), followed by Fran Ganter, Tony Dungy, and Rick Neuheisel.

Saban was, at best, their fifth choice, and walked into a dumpster fire that was equal parts Rutgers athletics dysfunction and North Carolina academic integrity and compliance. That he never went worse than .500 and turned out a 10 win season before bailing for LSU is really remarkable. He also did this from 95-99, which might have been the high point of Big Ten competitiveness in my lifetime.

Imagine if he had never left Sparty. Wow.

You can't compare NFL and college

Nobody did.
Fact is, his record at places that have to deal with parity (MAC, MSU, Dolphins) is night and day from his record at big-name locations that enjoy large benefits (LSU, Alabama).
Those facts aren't changing.

It takes nothing away from his Championships -- he's one of the best (if not the best -- I'm biased towards Urban).
But if we're talking about people to rebuild a program that doesn't have talent/recruiting advantages? Saban is not your man. That's the reality of the situation.

If maybe 3 or 4 plays go the other way, Alabama would have competed for 6 championships in Saban's 8 years there so far. We could be bowing before our backwater overlords if it weren't for a kick 6 and Urban (twice). He's not the best coach in football but he's no slouch, and he is the best recruiter. I'm not sure how you can fault him for going somewhere that would play to his strengths.

I do think his perfectionism is biting him in the ass though. Saban's defensive schemes are complex and varied, with calls for every conceivable situation. That's okay when you play Georgia and LSU, but against uptempo not so much. There's no time to get in the perfect call and personnel grouping. Most teams instead now play simple schemes that adjust to the offensive look on the fly. Saban refuses to do that, he's too stuck in his ways and probably enjoys micromanaging the defense too much. I feel like the uptempo trend might actually run him out of football. He blamed his NFL departure on not have control over outcomes. His comments and complaints about uptempo over the years have been very similar. Just doesn't seem like he likes where college football is going.

Coach Davis is the only one with any damn sense:

And of course...

I guess the answer to my question above is...apparently, not.

Per Sagarin, Baylor is ranked 2 in his formula despite a schedule strength of 105. The next team in the Sagarin poll with a triple digit sos is 5-1 North Carolina, ranked 27 with a strength of 100. Baylor's ranking is nothing more than a product of their 60 ppg offense. Please ignore the fact they've given up 30+ to half the teams they've faced.

Really though, I'm not worried about it. Baylor closes the season with @ Kansas St, Oklahoma, @ Oklahoma St, TCU (five day turnaround off the road trip to Stillwater), and Texas. That's a pretty tough stretch of five games in five weeks, and I anticipate they'll get clipped somewhere along the way.

I'm not getting caught up in their projected rankings because we're only half way through the season. None of this matters right now. BUT, does anyone else notice how last year they ALL had FSU ranked #1 all season long with the argument that "they're the defending champs and remain undefeated so they are #1" - flash forward to this year and we're the defending champs, undefeated, but outside most Top 4's even though we've won much more convincingly this year than FSU had looked last?

I think it's more of a reaction to what happened to Florida State last year and the unfair comparisons that are being made between Florida State and Ohio State. Last year Florida State won a lot of games in which late in those games it looked like they were going to lose. There hasn't been a game yet this year where in the fourth quarter I have doubted that we were going to win. Maybe the closest was Indiana, but as poorly as we played and turned the ball over, we still never were tied or behind late in that game.

In any case, they are two different teams. The only similarity is that they are defending champs. But I like the personalities around Ohio State 100 times more than those around Florida State. But I hope we keep getting more disrespect. It just will make us stronger. And in the end who cares. If we win the B1G we will be in the playoffs. So that's all the matters right now in my opinion. The polls are just for fun.

I don't man, I feel like FSU was running a tighter ship then we are

And if they win out, they'll be deserving. So it's all good.
