As much as they're in bed with the SEC, they're also in the 'Creating Controversy' business.
If everyone agrees on who should go to the playoff, that's bad for ratings. Even if it is 3 SEC teams. Need to rustle up some contenders so that there will be a big frenzy when one of them is left out.

As I've said elsewhere, Todd McShay has absolutely gushed over JT Barrett. And the ESPNU guys (and I really like watching the film study show with Mike Bellotti) have consistently been pushing the idea that there's no more dangerous team around right now than the Buckeyes.
