Ebola confirmed in the US

I could tell some stories about the current state of care in many hospital (including the VA) that would outrage you.

The VA I know something about. One of the stories that sticks in my memory is from several decades ago. A certain VA hospital had as patients a large number of Vietnam combat vets who understandably had psychological issues stemming from their experience. The geniuses who administered the place chose to hire a new psychiatrist...who was Vietnamese. Sure it helped heaps.

And we have an Ohio connection.

Ebola Patient Traveled By Air Day Before Symptoms Surfaced

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) The CDC has announced that the second healthcare worker diagnosed with Ebola traveled by air Oct. 13, the day before she first reported symptoms.

The CDC is now reaching out to all passengers who flew on Frontier Airlines flight 1143 Cleveland to Dallas/Fort Worth. The flight landed at 8:16 p.m. CT. The CDC has announced that the second healthcare worker diagnosed with Ebola traveled by air Oct. 13, the day before she first reported symptoms.

My greater point is don't lose sleep over Ebola. Worry that a Flu outbreak will overwhelm the hospitals and healthcare system causing many to die needlessly including many small children and elderly. The Flu isn't glamorous or headline leading but it's a greater threat to kill more people.

How many people die from seasonal flu each year in the United States?

The number of seasonal influenza-associated (i.e., seasonal flu-related) deaths varies from year to year because flu seasons are unpredictable and often fluctuate in length and severity. Therefore, a single estimate cannot be used to summarize influenza-associated deaths. Instead, a range of estimated deaths is a better way to represent the variability and unpredictability of flu. An August 27, 2010 MMWR report entitled “Thompson MG et al. Updated Estimates of Mortality Associated with Seasonal Influenza through the 2006-2007 Influenza Season. MMWR 2010; 59(33): 1057-1062.," provides updated estimates of the range of flu-associated deaths that occurred in the United States during the three decades prior to 2007. CDC estimates that from the 1976-1977 season to the 2006-2007 flu season, flu-associated deaths ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. Death certificate data and weekly influenza virus surveillance information was used to estimate how many flu-related deaths occurred among people whose underlying cause of death was listed as respiratory or circulatory disease on their death certificate.
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/us_flu-related_deaths.htm

To sum up the LOW amount of Flu deaths a year is 3000! A bad year can go into tens of thousands. Get a flu shot!

I agree with you Taosman I think there was some mismanagement in Dallas (my home) and it can be easily brought back into order at least in the states. But with flu season coming and the panic from Ebola a lot can go wrong quickly

I am very concerned about an Ebola outbreak in Cleveland.

You got Lebron back. You beat the Steelers. The city has to be on the edge of something horrific occurring on an apocalyptic scale...I'm talking dogs and cats living together.

I heard Ebola isn't going to stay in Cleveland if Manziel is on the roster next season.

Second Ebola-Infected Nurse Identified, Was Symptomatic With 99.5 Degree Fever While Flying
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-...was-symptomatic-995-degree-fever-while-flying

Just about an hour ago, the CDC's Tom Frieden held a press conference in which he tried to diffuse the CDC's incompetence for a allowing healthcare workers who cared for the now deceased "Index Patient" Thomas Eric Duncan, to board a plane. A worker, who as was reported earlier today, was confirmed sick with the deadly virus. Still, in order to defend his agency from accusations of gross incompetence, of which it clearly is guilty, Frieden said that...
  • NEW PATIENT HADN'T BEEN BLEEDING OR VOMITING BEFORE FLIGHT
... Although, he promptly pushed the ball of blame back in her court adding that:
  • NEW PATIENT KNOWINGLY EXPOSED TO EBOLA,SHOULDNT HAVE FLOWN

But what is worse, is that as the WaPo reports the nurse had a fever of 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit before boarding a passenger jet on Monday, a day before she reported symptoms of the virus and was tested, according to public health officials. "Even though there appeared to be little risk for the other people on that flight, she should not have traveled that way, Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a news conference Wednesday."

“She should not have flown on a commercial airline,” Frieden said.

The reason he said that is that since she was clearly symptomatic, she was also contagious. Which explains why the CDC is scrambling to uncover all those passengers who may have flowen with her.

And where it gets simply ridiculous is that not only did the nurse fly once, she flied a second time, this time from Cleveland to Texas on Monday.

Vinson, who flew from Dallas to Cleveland on Friday, flew back to Texas on Monday, a day after Pham was diagnosed. She reported a fever on Tuesday and was isolated and tested for Ebola.

Still, the fact that she boarded a commercial flight raises the question of how much the other 50 health-care workers who entered Duncan’s room could have traveled or moved around in recent days. The CDC recommends controlled movement on private flights or vehicles for people who may have been exposed to Ebola, Frieden said.

So, being already symptomatic with the elevated temp (and presumably contagious) did she have occasion to use the plane's toilet while flying?

Hope she didn't also have a tummy problem. Or a cough.

http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-pers...ers-need-optimal-respiratory-protection-ebola

The potential for transmission via inhalation of aerosols, therefore, cannot be ruled out by the observed risk factors or our knowledge of the infection process. Many body fluids, such as vomit, diarrhea, blood, and saliva, are capable of creating inhalable aerosol particles in the immediate vicinity of an infected person. Cough was identified among some cases in a 1995 outbreak in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo,11 and coughs are known to emit viruses in respirable particles.17 The act of vomiting produces an aerosol and has been implicated in airborne transmission of gastrointestinal viruses.18,19 Regarding diarrhea, even when contained by toilets, toilet flushing emits a pathogen-laden aerosol that disperses in the air...

There is also some experimental evidence that Ebola and other filoviruses can be transmitted by the aerosol route. Jaax et al24 reported the unexpected death of two rhesus monkeys housed approximately 3 meters from monkeys infected with Ebola virus, concluding that respiratory or eye exposure to aerosols was the only possible explanation.

Throw this into the mix, just for fun: Did our considerate nurse have anything to drink on the flight? If so, did the stewardess cruise down the aisle and pick up nurse's glass? Doubt stewardess was wearing latex gloves at the time. Hope for stewardess' sake her nose didn't itch on the way back to the plane's kitchen.

I'm not cowering under my bed (any more than usual, anyway) but I can see a whole lot of ways for this to go south. Mostly, from typical human stupidity and selfishness as has already been demonstrated by the known carriers.

M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E.

What the fuck were they thinking letting her do that? And what the FUCK was she thinking getting on a plane?

It will be interesting to see how much different the coverage is for #2 than it was for #1. Her, Her employer, and the CDC better hope she didn't give it to anyone in Ohio or on a plane or they are going to be paying out a ton of money in court.

Uh, yeahhhh...about that:

http://thescoopblog.dallasnews.com/...rker-tests-positive-for-ebola-in-dallas.html/

Vinson traveled to Cleveland on Friday to visit her mother and fiance in preparation for her wedding. She returned to Dallas on Monday.

No worries, then. Just a quick (symptomatic, contagious) visit to her fiance. I'm sure there was no exchange of bodily fluids of any kind during the visit.

Didn't I see this scene in the film Outbreak?

Would it be in poor taste to have an over/under bet on the fiance being infected?
I'm putting my v-cash on 100% yes.
