E. Gordon Gee (President West Virginia U.)

I'd rather have a university president saying this than implying support for segregation as Alabama's did when talking about their campus' greek communities (which garnered no attention or outrage from any press that I recall).

That's like saying you'd rather have jock itch than AIDS. Completely understandable. But still very annoyed by the jock itch.

Saying something stupid and inflammatory is intimately linked with people giving money? Sadly, I don't doubt that.

Being a normal person that talks with you like a normal person is a more effective way to connect with people than being a robot that is afraid to do or say anything.

Have you ever met Gee in person, or do you base your opinion on what you see and read about him online?

It's undeniable that he is one of the best University Presidents in the country, particularly when it comes to fundraising, so maybe just maybe you're out of the mainstream regarding your opinion of him?

Regarding your Mike Hart reference- Hart said a lot of stupid things and went 0-4. Gee is great at his job and gets results.

You don't have to be a robot to not say idiotic things. Being normal doesn't imply constantly putting your foot in your mouth. The two aren't inextricably intertwined.

Sure, I've met him. There's nothing particularly impressive about the man. He's a glorified bow-tie wearing mascot.

He's a great fundraiser for a university with a big alumni base that identifies as much with the school as any alumni base in the country. Sorry if I don't anoint the man for being able to pick low-hanging fruit.

It's ok to say stupid things as long as your fundraising base doesn't care that you say stupid things? Well, duh. There's zero accountability.

It's amazing to me that so many people seem just now to be catching on to the fact that Gordon Gee is not now, nor has he ever been, politically correct. He doesn't care to be. It really hasn't had any negative effect on his career, so why would he? Good grief, he was married to a woman with a huge taste for weed for many years, yet he continued to be hired by extremely prestigious schools.

The people who are raising the greatest hue and cry about Gee are a bunch of sports pundits like Mark Packer, Tim Brando and Dan Wetzel, many of whom have had the cheek to call Gee an "idiot" or "moron." Ironic, since Gee's IQ probably exceeds the aggregate of the three I listed above.

The fact that sports pundits feel emboldened to call for the ouster of an outstanding university president speaks volumes about the overweening self-importance of the sports-entertainment complex. Guys, what you do is just not all that significant! Get over yourselves! Sports does not make the earth rotate.

Bottom line is that what Gee said was a bunch of silly jokes; nothing more, and they don't reflect any negative attitudes toward Catholics, Notre Dame grads, or Jim Delany. I won't extend that to Louisville or the S-E-C, but I'd simply add what those S-E-C clowns say (legitimately) about the Big Ten relative to football: if you don't want to be criticized, do something to make the criticism moot - win some games (or for the S-E-C, improve your academics).

/Rant off

Karen Holbrook proved that the fruit isn't that low hanging. At least Gee is smart enough to direct his barbs at other groups outside of the alumni base.

Also, I'm not anointing him and I'm not defending what he said. I'm saying that the stupid thing he said is being overblown and that Gee gets a long leash (obviously since they are reoccurring instances of this) because he is damn good at his job.

It does seem amazing given the recent history of issues with ND, the Teo invisible girl friend and the delay/cover-up, the death of an videographer and the callous attitude from some of the members of the university towards the death and the especially the careless decisions that resulted in the death, and the alleged cover-up of an alleged rape by ND football players that this is getting a lot of press and some of those incidents were scantly mentioned in the press (Teo incident not withstanding).

So what exactly is the crux of your problem with Gee occasionally saying things that get people in sports-media circles upset? Is it affecting OSU's fundraising ability, academic reputation, athletic success, political sway? Or do you just generally take offense at all comments that might come at anyone else's expense?

Seriously, "nothing particularly impressive about the man"? Sorry, but your Debbie Downer routine is way off here. Gee is a human dynamo! He's an incredible administrator (who knows when to delegate) and works a room (large or small) as well as any politician ever has. Go read up on OSU presidents over the past half-century, then think about this number: 2.5 BILLION! Being an iconoclast among college admins gives him a little bit of free rein to speak freely when his audiences starts talking sports.
