Dear Friends:
In this season of light and hope, we take time to reflect on auld lang syne. Certainly, the past year has been an extraordinary one in the life of The Ohio State University. This institution is thriving. Our world-class faculty are making unprecedented strides in research, with their discoveries reaching every corner of the globe. Our talented students are uniquely driven to do good in the community and beyond. And our staff, alumni, and friends' caring and commitment ensure that our important work continues. Quite simply, this University transforms lives. And I am deeply thankful for the support and engagement of our Ohio State family.

This past year held myriad successes for the University, of which I will share but a few:
  • The brightest incoming class in school history, and $444 million awarded in scholarships, grants, and student employment
  • Annie Leibowitz exhibition breaking all attendance records in Wexner Center's 23-year history
  • Eighteen faculty elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
  • A spectacular 12-0 football season, in addition to 312 Ohio State student-athletes being named Academic All-Big Ten
  • New wind energy partnership with Iberdrola, providing 20 percent of the power delivery on our Columbus campus
  • The launch of But for Ohio State, the largest fundraising campaign in Ohio State?s history
In the words of T.S. Eliot: "For last year's words belong to last year's language, and next year's words await another voice." Indeed, I believe that Ohio State's voice has never been stronger and will continue to soar. And, I look forward to sharing a collective chorus of good cheer in the coming year. My very best wishes for a joyful 2013.

E. Gordon Gee
President, The Ohio State University

For all the tuition-whiners -- not necessarily here on BP, but they're out there :nerd:

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/02/21/gee-wants-to-freeze-osu-tuition.html

Ohio State froze tuition for the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years - one more year than required by the state. Ohio State has kept to the 3.5 percent tuition cap since then. If approved, this would be the fourth year tuition has been frozen since Gee's return to OSU in 2007.
...
Ohio State is able to freeze tuition at a time of diminished state funding and uncertain federal dollars, Gee said, because it has looked for other revenue.
...
Ohio State has the second-lowest cost among the six Ohio public universities with selective admissions, campus officials said. Only Kent State costs less.

I just view it as when you're at the top and a public official, people take shots at you. Add to that, people know that most things Ohio State get views, clicks, reads, etc.

I'm sure other AD's or schools presidents make similar remarks. But most people don't know who the school president is at Kentucky, Harvard or other schools, in addition to not caring about what they say (because they're not as high-profile and don't generate reaction).

Disagree completely. You don't take shots at a large group of people who some probably pay for your salary. Someone in his standing/title, you don't say that kind of stuff. CEO, Presidents, etc of companies don't come out and say this kind of garbage

Trump, Cuban, Sepp Blatter, David Stern, Jerry Jones, and George Steinbrenner.

People who all generate reaction, as does Gee. Notice information from a public records request is on the front page of every single sports site right now.

Okay I'll give you those, but they make general stupid comments. Do they attack a large religious group?

nobody from the SEC pays his salary and his comments about ND were spot on. this is more people looking for something to whine about than anything that might actually be offensive.

And every one of those guys is a private-business owner, not a publicly paid official at one of the largest public universities in the world.

Gee's comments the last few years have been progressively getting more inappropriate. As an alum, he is starting to embarrass me.

Time to move this to the Pussification of America thread.

The Priests running Notre Dame are NOT good partners and they'd be the first to tell you that. The no doubt TIC 'damn Catholics' was probably poorly worded but it wasn't an attack on the Catholic Church.

How about we actually know what his exact comments were regarding the SEC & Louisville (and in context) before we start the hands to foreheads woe is me routines?

And yes public officials say far worse all the time, it just rarely gets reported unless a specific group or report has an ax to grind.
