(Duplicate) Defensive Coordinator Luke Fickell (official thread)

The 2011 job at tOSU was set up for failure. You take a team with a below average offensive staff and then remove the best offensive coach, whom happens to be the head coach and expect to fill it with an interim guy who is a defensive guru. LF can not take over the offense and has no idea what to do about it. He is pretty much doing the only thing he can do and let them do what they can.....which in my opinion has been under achieve the last 10 years, minus 06 and last season. Thank goodness the big 10 and michigan have been down the last 10 years.....this allowed JT to cover up for JB.

I have no idea how to fix this because there isnt a solution. We will get better when the 5 return but even then we didnt spend this year grooming BM or anybody with the POTENTIAL to develop....instead we had a 4 qb battle in the fall. Quite honestly I am beginning to believe that we either have no talent on the roster at qb or we chose the 5th year because we cant evaluate potential and talent. We do have a 3 step quick release passer(TG) on the team and we have a true dual threat(BM). I cant help but think one of the two should have been groomed this fall to take over. Go Bucks

If LF is the HC then he needs to make the personell decisions not the OC unless GS has him on a leash as HC in name only and the AD wants coaching by committee. otherwise LF needs to take total control of the team for better or worse

I really don't see how anyone can be ok with him not calling the timeout.

When your D is out their busting their butts and you basically just show them you give up, what kind of message does that send to them? What kind of message does that send to your entire team? That if it's not likely to come back, then we'll give up? I mean heck the broadcast guys where baffled, and even they usually like to try and make excuses for coaches resonings.

That is two boneheaded decisions Fickell made. Just like decling the penalty a game or two ago that instead of making the other team have 4th and a bit, he accepted it and gave them 3rd and long.....

I'm sorry, but Fickell seems like a dear caught in the headlights. He is the headcoach, so he needs to take charge until that title isn;'t there.

He needs to announce Braxton as the starter and rep him with the ones all week in preparation. He needs to give us a gameplan, and we need to actually use some offense for once, namely playcalling.

He has a ton of talent, so no excuses that you can't at least build a pretty solid team. With all that happened in the off-season, we don't expect a Rose Bowl trophy, but dang at least 9 wins should be feasible, and based off our only 2 games that actually mattered, we look like a sub.500 team.

He has two choices, make the right call, get some guys experience, or keep in Joe and lose games and his job....

Here is my theory on bad clock managment that is seen over and over again for most teams....


Head coaches don't sit around all day on Saturday and Sunday and watch 6 or 7 games. So they don't see all these coaches making horrible decisions regarding clock management. Us fans are experts since we see it over and over and over again.

Okay, as an outside observer of the team, I have a question...

I watched the game last weekend, and during the game I was posting on the thread. I was supporting tOSU because we're part of the same conference now, but after watching the first three quarters, I came to the conclusion that Coach Fickell was trying to get outta there with a respectable score in the L column. Which puzzled the hell outta me, but I figured it because of one thing:

He kept pulling Braxton Miller.

I may be wrong - but the consensus of fans that were posting during the game last week were not very happy with the coaching staff. The receivers let both QBs down, and it was fairly obvious that the fans were looking for a change. I take that with a grain of salt at times (having coached myself for 7 years), as the coaches know the players better than fans do.

But after they put Miller in for one play, then pulled him, then put him in, he fumbled, then they pulled him.....I was convinced that they (coaches) had to have thrown in the towel much earlier in the game - which leads me to this question....

These guys coached with Coach Tressel for a long time. His brother is on the staff still (as far as I know, please correct me if I'm wrong). They probably figure that they're all living on borrowed time till the end of the season.

Is it possible that they don't care about winning games cause they think they're gonna get fired anyway?

Again, I'm not trying to bash or anything, this is a valid question. I mean, Coach Pelini stayed with Taylor Martinez even though he's a turnover machine...but he committed to the guy, and that will only make him as a player better. What I saw last week was an unwillingness to commit to the freshman that went way beyond indecision as a rookie head coach.

Most of us are bewildered by Coach Fickell's stubborn insistence on continuing to play Joe B at quarterback over Braxton Miller, but I can assure you your explanation is not on point. Fickell has always been an intense, fiery competitor.

No way--Fickell grew up in Columbus, played at OSU and has been an assistant for years. I've got to believe that he wants OSU to win every time they take the field as much or more than anyone else walking around today.

Okay - thanks for the explanation. I don't know much about Coach Fickell, but I do know what it's like for a coach to give up on the school and players (see Bill Callahan).

I hate seeing that from coaches.

I just don't buy this. If the team tanks, their careers are in tow. I think Tressel was the Alpha and Omega of his team and made a lot of guys look good / did other jobs he shouldn't have had to do when it came to offense. Now that he is gone, you have a lot of people that are inexperienced and unprepared to handle the level of responsibility thrust upon them over the summer. I think they want to win, they just have to learn how.
