Does it seem at all like Ohio State or Coach Meyer is grooming Luke Fickell to take over?

During the press conference, Meyer said Coach Fickell will have input on the new assistant coaches.

I don't know why, but it seems like Fickell is on deck or something.

The thought of Luke being an "apprentice" to Meyer is very exciting. That gives us the potential to have a coach who not only played here, but coached under Jim Tressel AND Urban Meyer, who could be our 2 most successful coaches ever.

I don't believe Fickell will ever be the "real" HC at OSU until he proves he can be successful as HC elsewhere. Two years under Meyer and it will be time for Luke to move on.

To be perfectly honest, I'm hoping it's sooner than two years and I hope it's a BCS-level job.

We saw during this entire process that maybe the hiring committee will not hire a coach without vast head-coaching experience. Although, Florida named Will Muschamp head coach.

Just hope for the best for Fickell.

And deservedly so! He played a part this year that he wasn't ready for and was thrust upon him at the last minute. IMO, he is still a future Ohio State head coach in waiting. A further apprenticeship for X years under Urban Meyer will only solidify that!

First, thank you to Coach Fickell for the hard work and effort he put in this year. I hope that his future is very bright.

I thought I saw where that was discussed under Tress, was it not?

Regardless, I think a couple years under Meyer will be great for Fickell. It will give him another perspective on how to do things to draw from when he's running his own program one day.

No, they can't be.

Way back in the dim and distant past, there was this guy named Wayne Woodrow something or other.

Word. I can't fathom the thought. Urban Meyer is a home run hire, I haven't doubted that for about six or seven years - I always figured he'd come back 'home' eventually, just not like this with Tressel leaving in disgrace.

But anyway you slice it, Tressel had a great run. 6 straight conference titles! 1 national title, 3 title game appearances in 6 years. If Urban could actually top that that'd be insane, because IMHO we just lived the glory years. The trajectory that JT was on in this day and age is really unfathomable. I think a lot of people should go back and look at how good the team was just last year. Had tattoo-gate not broken, we're playing LSU again this year.

If Urban actually tops all that from just the JT era?

Man ... we're spoiled.

It seems that way, but I find it hard to believe that somebody won't scoop Luke up before Meyer is done here.

Luke was dealt an incredibly difficult deck of cards this season, and showed a lot of room for growth as a HC, something that he could remedy in a job that doesn't carry the enormous pressures of being "the Man" at one of, if not THE, most difficult jobs in college football. I could see Luke taking a job at a MAC school down the road, parlaying that into a pretty good BCS job, then eventually finding his way back to C-bus with a pretty damn good resume down the road. He has a lot of potential, and I think he'll make a name for himself on his own eventually. The way he's handled himself, and the pressures of being handed a wounded program, reflects very well on himself as a coach and a man.

I sure hope so! Nobody deserves the job more than Fick. Someone mentioned that JT mentioned doing the same and I recall that was the case. So now TWO premier HCs have seen Luke's potential.

Maybe they just don't want to see him across the field some Saturday afternoon.

Anyway you slice it, the future of Buckeye football is bright.

Ohio State football: Still part of team
Meyer impressed with job Fickell did under trying circumstances, will keep him on staff
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday November 29, 2011

Luke Fickell was reluctant to say much. This was Urban Meyer?s moment, he said.

Repeating a line he?d used all year in his only season as Ohio State coach, Fickell said: ?It?s not about me.?

But Fickell will stay on the Buckeyes? coaching staff under Meyer.

?I?m back, and I?m happy to be here,? Fickell said. ?It?s an emotional time.?

Sources said he will be the defensive coordinator, although neither Meyer nor Fickell would confirm that.

?It will be a significant title and significant position on our staff,? Meyer said

Said Fickell, ?I?m going to let him do the talking.?

Fickell had hopes of retaining his head-coaching job, but a 6-6 record that included losses in Ohio State?s final three regular-season games doomed his chances. Fickell and his staff will coach the Buckeyes in whatever bowl they play in, athletic director Gene Smith said.

Smith said he informed Fickell on Wednesday night that he would not continue as coach beyond this season, after Fickell asked to be informed of his status. They met at the Schottenstein Center during the Ohio State-VMI men?s basketball game.

?He wanted the job, and rightfully so,? Smith said. ?He had positioned himself well. So he was disappointed.?
