DT Tracy Sprinkle (National Champion)

Even Ohio State football players can’t refuse request from Starr

Ohio State offensive lineman, and Elyria native, Chase Farris signs an autograph for Mackenzie Williams, 7, of Elyria, on Thursday.

When Elyria High School intervention specialist Stacie Starr makes a request, her unbridled abundance of energy makes it hard to say no.

It doesn’t matter if you are a former Elyria Schools student, living the college life at The Ohio State University and a part of the national champion Buckeye football team. When Starr calls, you come.

That’s how former EHS Pioneers Chase Farris, class of 2011, and Tracy Sprinkle, class of 2013, ended up in a building full of elementary school children Thursday afternoon at Save Our Children, a non-profit after-school program on the city’s south side. Starr is related to the organization’s executive director, Lisa Bramhall, so getting a foot in the door was no problem for Starr.

Geared toward at-risk kids, Starr said she knew a visit from both football players to the program would be more than welcomed, possibly inspirational.

She was right.

Can he play inside? Didn't know how he compared to a player like Mike B.

I have always seen him as moving inside...both due to his frame and marginal athletic ability as an edge guy. He would be best suited inside imo. I'm not sure he compares to Bennett well, Mike's first step was significantly more explosive and he has always played inside, whereas Sprinkle has been a DE and relies more on strength. Then again, the last I really saw him play was his senior film from high school, so I don't know exactly how much he has developed since then.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS FROM OHIO STATE'S 2016 PHOTO DAY

The winner of the day, however, was defensive tackle Tracy Spinkle's dreadlocks.

OHIO STATE TEAMMATES CONFIDENT IN TRACY SPRINKLE'S ABILITIES BOTH AS A LEADER AND NEW STARTER AT DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Each asked to tab a breakout player on Ohio State's defense ahead of the program's first game in the 2016 season, a pair of team leaders didn't hesitate.

"Tracy Sprinkle," middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan said Monday. "He wasn't voted a captain but I think by the end of the year guys will look to him as one of the guys who led this 2016 team going into the season."

"I think Tracy will have a good game and great season," center Pat Elflein added.

Sprinkle is now a redshirt junior and more than two years removed from a bad Fourth of July weekend where Lorain police arrested him at a bar for possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia and rioting/failure to disperse. Urban Meyer kicked him off the team but eventually reinstated Sprinkle once the legal process took its course and after the defensive lineman served a one-game suspension and performed subsequent community service, among other things.

A player who lost his opportunity to play for his home-state Buckeyes because of a dumb mistake to now being considered a team leader. Talk about a life shift.

"I've definitely grown a lot and it made me mature a lot," Sprinkle said last week. "I'm happy where I'm at right now."

Urban Meyer Updates Aug. 30 Teleconference

Tracy Sprinkle comes from a supportive family and has come a long way as a Buckeye. Larry Johnson has done well with him. He's going to be a graduate, a leader and a starter.
