DT Robert "BB" Landers (Official Thread)

I'm envisioning Cosch Johnson sending out a constant stream of Lineman after QBs and I can see Landers fitting in great in that rotation in the middle. We need depth in the middle to remain elite.

After watching his film, two words come to mind: explosive and relentless.

His get-off at the snap is in the elite category and will command double teams. This initial burst, plus a very nice swim move, make him very difficult for a center or guard to handle one-on-one. He really does a nice job staying low and fighting to get to the ball when the opposition doubles him. At one point early in the film he even gets tripled, holds his ground, and allows the rushers to collapse the pocket from the outside. My favorite part of his game though is the way he finishes the play. He is just as violent when he meets the ball carrier as he is off the line. It will be fun to watch him over the next few years as he continues to develop and Coach Johnson teaches him some more tricks to pair with his natural gifts.
The film of his one-on-ones at camps is ridiculous. I know these drills don't reflect the reality of a game situation, but his first step is so quick that the o-linemen simply did not have a chance.

For those concerned about his lack of vertical stature, I think this plays to his advantage against some of the behemoth OL he'll face in the B1G...lowest always wins in the trenches. He also appears to have a thicker frame which could easily hold another 25-30 pounds of muscle. Not sure about everyone else, but I like the idea of a quick, strong, athletic 300+lb DT...

He can always go to tOSU University hospital and get on the traction machine, adding 4-6 inches to his frame, if that would make Buckeye Nation happy. From what I've read above, the kid has both the motor and the heart to excel. I'd rather have the heart than the 'measurables' of a kid who has always done well from peewee to HS, but hasn't been tested. That's what I love so much about 'modern' football, are the camps where the elite athletes compete against elite athletes. Probably the wrong thread for this, but if Lander has earned his spurs with the Buckeye coaches (Johnston), then his heart will make him play taller, and make him successful as a Buckeye. Go Bucks!

It is a pretty good highlight reel. He is definitely delivering heavy impact when he arrived at the ball.

But I have to say that the first thing that comes to mind when watching it is whether anyone teaches OL to block in high school. He has dozens of plays where he is untouched.

I think the Bennett comparisons make some sense, but his size and speed through the line actually remind me more of Aaron Donald out of Pitt. Slightly under 6'1", around 285, very quick first step, extremely disruptive. I'm not saying he's on or will be on that level because that's awfully high praise. If he turns out anything close to that he'll be special. Donald is a strong defensive rookie of the year candidate now for the Rams.

Geno Atkins and Aaron Donald are two great examples of short, quick, strong DTs who have dominated in the NFL.

One disadvantage he will have to overcome is being short and more specifically lacking "length" makes it hard to wrap around a bigger back and you can see that multiple times where he makes the big hit but bounces off. He has to have perfect tackling form to overcome that and that gets harder when you are tired or fighting off blocks. He looks athletic enough to offset some of that but I expect him to miss some tackles, ... We'll see.
