DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

Not you too. You're breaking my heart.

You were the first one I thought of when grad started posting.
Great information and that's what this board has that makes it great.

D wasn't good. But D gave a chance for the O to win the last two games. O didn't come through. I'm not sure you can blame D for everything.

Not everything, but if there was a problem on the team for the last two seasons then the D was it. The O scored 35 points the other night. Even mediocre defense wins a game when the O gives them 35 points.

Yeah when I say "trust the coaches", it's more along the lines of "trust Urban Meyer". He's the one ultimately responsible for everyone keeping their jobs. The buck stops with him. Period. A lot of folks believe that Urban agrees with them as far as Luke goes. I don't believe that. I think Urban believes talent and recruiting trumps coaching. Luke seems to be someone Urban holds in high regard. If Urban makes a change, I trust him. He hasn't yet, nor do I expect him to.

Talent is not the issue. MSU did not have better defensive personnel. However, they had 11 WAO screaming banshees who played every down with reckless abandon because of their thorough knowledge and belief in the scheme. Players play fast when they do not have to think...tOSU's athletes usually looked like robots. That tells me the scheme is not being transferred. How many blown coverages, poor screen fits, awful 2nd and 3rd level techniques, or successful blitzes did we see all season long. Some issues were never fixed. How is talent like Marcus and Bell on the sideline while we watch other players come up short time and again? Now I wonder about Trey Johnson, Cam Burrows, etc...

I've always said trust the coaches, but I'm wavering here...with the personnel decisions, lack of adjustments, and sometimes absolute ridiculous calls, I'm out of trust. Luke has been a loyal Buckeye but he is not getting it done.

This...great post...Bell not starting and marcus not rotating more are all sad...All fickells fault? Possibly but I'm sure vrabel and combs had some say in who should be playing I assume...regardless of who makes the decisions on who plays and who doesnt, the best players have to be out on the field, end of story...i still think Fickell stays because I can't see meyer giving him the boot...If that is the case then I think that dude who delivered him a pizza a while back needs to go back over there and tell him how it is

Let's hope the guy Urban brings in doesn't believe in soft coverage with the corners like Withers did. I think continuity would be better for Fickell and the defense. Why not go out and get a guy like Taver Johnson?

A) He coached corners here under Tressel/Heacock/Fickell and did a great job
B) He has coordinating experience, experience as an assistant head coach/interim head coach. It says a lot when you join a staff for a few weeks and are immediately tabbed interim head coach.
C) Has coached under multiple head coaches, all of which are pretty different. He was retained by Meyer, hired under Petrino, and retained by Bielema.
D) Works in the SEC, good for the recruiting trail
E) He works for Bielema. You know Meyer would love to get another punch in anytime he can.

Luke Fickell comes across as a really nice guy.

Aside from Dick LeBeau, I'm not sure I've ever heard of a top-level football coach about whom it could be said he was a really nice guy. (I thought that was true of Tressel, but since The Departure I think that was a mistaken perception.) Perhaps Fickell lacks the necessary prickitude to force his will onto the other defensive coaches and players, I don't know. But I sense that grad's comments above are absolutely correct relative to the issue being neither talent nor coaching knowledge.

Prior to Friday night, the 279-0-1 record when scoring 35 or more definitely agrees that even mediocre defense should win the game, as I'm sure not all of those 279 wins had a stellar defense...

During one of his interviews before the game, urban said that he had high confidence that fickell would be able to fix the defense and get things right against Clemson. 1) that clearly didn't happen, and 2) that could be lead to believe that fickell has more say/control of this defense than withers. That kind of scares me the more I think about it

I believe that comment was made before the losses of Roby, Grant, and Spence were known.

Internally he would have had a pretty good idea about roby and grant and at least known potentially about spence, so not so sure about that. Maybe all 3 weren't officially out at that time, but I'm sure he had a clue that it was very possible.
I don't remember exactly when he made the statement. If it was made within a week or so after the BTCG, I doubt he knew they wouldn't play. If it was made after Christmas, yes he probably had a good idea they wouldn't.

To be fair he's not going to come out and say "I think they are going to be awful like they've been all year". He's certainly not blind to what's been going on all season. I'm sure that these units aren't stellar in practice every single day either.
