DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

Watching Perry on that WR screen was excrutiating..fly out their with a good angle and tackle..Who was the playcaller on the field? Where was the player leadership?
I could never tell who was force and who was running the alley...that's how mushed up the fits were. Barnett had multiple kill shots but geared down and Watkins sped through the gap.

Talent is not the issue. MSU did not have better defensive personnel. However, they had 11 WAO screaming banshees who played every down with reckless abandon because of their thorough knowledge and belief in the scheme. Players play fast when they do not have to think...tOSU's athletes usually looked like robots. That tells me the scheme is not being transferred. How many blown coverages, poor screen fits, awful 2nd and 3rd level techniques, or successful blitzes did we see all season long. Some issues were never fixed. How is talent like Marcus and Bell on the sideline while we watch other players come up short time and again? Now I wonder about Trey Johnson, Cam Burrows, etc...

I've always said trust the coaches, but I'm wavering here...with the personnel decisions, lack of adjustments, and sometimes absolute ridiculous calls, I'm out of trust. Luke has been a loyal Buckeye but he is not getting it done.

Is it your feeling that we're just truly finding out how Fickell really is as a talent evaluator (both recruiting and practice/game) and how good a teacher he is (scheme and position coach) now that Heacock is gone? Was Heacock and/or Johnson (Tavers was an LB and LB coach elsewhere) covering for him that well or has the additional burden of calling plays/gaming planning with someone who he isn't on the same page as/shell shocked from his interim HC stint eroded his talent that much.

I know its kinda all over the map, the gist is... Is this who Fickell has always been or has something happened that made his skillset degrade?

I think Luke definitely knows his stuff...that isn't a question. However, there just seems to be a disconnect in how he is teaching his vision. What is his vision? What is his identity as a DC? Instead of installing and teaching a philosophy, it looks more like 3 different levels on 3 different pages. I am in no way questioning his work ethic, passion, or knowledge...but something is missing here. Not every coach is a leader...right now, Luke isn't coming across as a leader.

What are your thoughts on Withers and his role/contribution to the defense over the past couple years? Was Luke solely responsible for the defensive philosophy or was it at least partially a case of too many cooks spoiling the (schematic) broth?

Oil and water. Co-never works...who had the final say?
Thanks for the answer on the other question I asked. What are your thoughts on Urban seeming to insist the next coach he hires will be CO-DC. Is the CO title a way to keep from paying assistances extraordinary high salaries or is it a guard against losing momentum if one of them is a hot up and coming coach and leaves?

Luke isn't coming across as a leader.

I completely agree. I think that was his biggest weakness during his interim HC stint too. I'm not sure if it's me, but it I get the impression that he's going through the motions. It's almost as if he's still coaching at OSU because that is what's expected of him. I know he's mild mannered, but I see no fire. I see no personal accountability on his behalf. I just see a coach that probably needs a change. I will never begin to understand what goes into his job, or any other asst. coaches on that staff. But when his units continue to under-perform, it's almost as if he has lost his identity as a coach. I say it's time to move on....for his sake and for Ohio States.

Glad to hear osugrad. I totally agree on the scheme appearing to be a non-scheme. Our guys obviously are not understanding their responsibilities.

I am not a big fan of our technique in the secondary either. How many guys have we seen not turn and find the ball. I understand on occasion you if you are beat you have to play the man and time your attempt to block the pass, but we do it so often, with so many DBs making the same mistake IMHO I believe it is being taught. I hate to see our DBs play the man instead of play the ball. They either end up looking foolish as the receiver reaches over their head and snatches the ball off of the back of our DB's necks, or they get an interference call.

Last night we were running a cover 2 and the we woefully attempted to jam the inside receiver from 5 yards off. That is dang near impossible to get a good collision playing that far off again IHMO. I think our secondary technique is bad really bad.

There have been times where we have lined up in the red zone with what appeared to be the RE having contain. I do not know if we lined up wrong or what, but ichigan scored once on a sweep when we had no one outside the RE.

Also, how many times have we seen men completely uncovered on the goal line, no one within 20 yards of the guy like one of the TDs last night. On the GL we have to be in man. Someone is screwing up. To me, that is lack of preparation and no communication on the field. That is unacceptable for it to happen once, but it happened at least three times this year I can recall.
