“We hear all that stupid crap about ‘Fire Fickell’ and all that. That pisses me off because that guy’s done so much, he’s changed my life. He gave me the opportunity to even wear this jersey,” said redshirt freshman linebacker Darron Lee. “So I go out, I fight for not only my brothers, but I for him too because he gave me this opportunity. I take that a little bit to heart, I go out and fight for him even more. Honestly, it is pretty annoying because some fans really don’t know what they’re talking about. So it’s kind of just like shut up and watch the game, please. But that’s all I can really say to that.”
Added Joshua Perry, a junior linebacker: “It’s hard for me to listen to people say negative things about him because I know how much he cares about this, I know how much hard work he puts into this.
Part of a family atmosphere. I think fickell along with some of the other coaches are starting to really see Columbus as home and family. There is a point where that is more important than head coaching or making another million. Whereas Herman's desire to be a HC was his drive I think fickell (and ash hopefully) is where he wants to be. Ensure these guys are happy and keep throwing more cash at them.I think Fickell will be here a long time, but I don't think at all that the 2011 season means he can't be a head coach. Heck, Urban had a 5 loss Florida team with his program in full swing. To keep the boat steady and still recruit were bigger achievements than anyone at the time could realize. We didn't have a slew of transfers, we didn't have weak recruiting, etc. The fact that Fickell kept us afloat made sure that Urban's first years would be as good as they were, rather than the typical rinse everything out and start over approach (such as what Charlie Strong is dealing with in TX).
Not to mention his staff was picked for him. I understand the decision by the Athletic Department to keep continuity in the staff, but Fick most certainly did not get an actual shot at being the HC. He was a place holder. And I'm thankful he put his ego aside and took so much abuse from fans to do whatever was needed to help tOSU.I think Fickell will be here a long time, but I don't think at all that the 2011 season means he can't be a head coach.
