DT Johnathan "Big Hank" Hankins (Seattle Seahawks)

And Malcolm Jenkins. And James Laurinitis.

Trust me dude, we would all love to see Hank back. But health and financial stability are far more important than the game of football.

I don't remember anyone--at any point--suggesting that either of your two examples could be a top-10 pick in the draft.

I do think JL's stock dropped from his junior year to senior year. For no apparent reason, I might add, but he was projected mid first round if I'm not mistaken.

JL was projected top 5 by some boards before he returned for his senior season. He dropped because he didn't show "improvement" :roll2:

Still set the all time solo tackle record in the BCS NC, but apparently that wasn't enough.

What exactly did he gain (from an NFL draft standpoint)? Did his team win a national title?
Just look at the photo of him on his knees at the end of the Sugar Bowl and that will tell you exactly what he gained. JFC, do you need to be guaranteed a national title to come back? Again, ask Heyward if he thought it was worth staying for his senior year....while he didn't gain any real benefit draft-wise, he also didn't lose anything draft-wise either. What he did gain were invaluable memories of his senior season, Senior Day, another pair of Gold Pants, and being a crucial member of the team that finally beat an SEC team in a BCS bowl game.

From Mili's example, using the 2012 draft as a reference, the difference between the first DT off the board (9-Dontari Poe) and the fourth (36-Derek Wolfe) was 4yr/$11.3m (fully guaranteed, $6.6m signing bonus) and 4yr/$5.2m ($3.2m guaranteed, no bonus).

Yeah, Poe's contract is better than Wolfe's ... but Wolfe's contract is far superior to the one Hankins has now with the NCAA.

A top of the 2nd round grade still earns Hank $3m+ guaranteed. Take the money big fella.
Yeah, and being the first DT off the board gets him an extra $8.1m...350% more.

Cam Heyward's family financial status can hardly be compared with most collegiate athletes.
So, only if your family is rich should you stay for your senior year?

And Mike Doss. Thank you...

The NFL life span is irrelevent until he actually enters the NFL...his staying for his senior year in college has nothing to do with his NFL life span. Saying it does is what's silly.

Right because he'll never face chop blocks or have people rolling into him at the college level.....He's a big dude - eventually his knees are going to break down, why not maximize how long you can get paid to play a game?

And why get paid low first round or high second round money when he can earn back that projected top-5 projection he had before the season by improving his stamina (which appears to be his knock according to many here and NFL scouts)?

And who knows what the team priorities of the NFL will be next year? If he gets a first round grade this year he should go.

Jesus, we go through this every time someone thinks about leaving early. :smash:

Just thinking of the commitment it would take from Big Hank to return-

It's another Winter Conditioning, it's another Spring Practice, it's another Summer Workouts, and another Fall Practice...then a 13+ game season. All on a 350+ pound body at a grueling position.

That would be some crazy level of love and dedication to this program because he could go through the conditioning, practices, and games next season while cashing a hefty check each week.

(Oh, and the whole going to class thing)

He's gone people, you might as well move this thread to the alumni forum.

You don't come back "just to win a national championship"..that isn't realistic. Guys like Malcolm and James coming back were great stories, but they didn't come back JUST to try to win the NC. Right now the pros of staying don't even begin to approach the cons for a guy like Hank.

Different sport, but ... Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Al Horford.

Players are motivated by different things. That being said, I have no idea what Hank will do (my guess is that he is leaving).
