DT Haskell (The Rascal) Garrett (All B1G, 1st Team All-American)

DT Haskell Garrett
Ohio State needs its returning defensive tackles to step up and have a huge impact this season. With the departure of DaVon Hamilton, Robert Landers and Jashon Cornell, the Buckeyes will have to rely on their backups from last season to step into bigger roles and make a difference. Haskell Garrett could be the most important piece to that. A different offseason doesn’t help the defensive line settle in, but if Garrett can return to the field after a shooting incident and make an impact for the Buckeyes this fall — if they can play — he’ll likely see a rise in draft stock like Hamilton’s from last year.

SKULL SESSION: HASKELL GARRETT NEEDS HELP, JONAH JACKSON IS BALLING OUT AS A ROOKIE, AND TYVIS POWELL SHARES A ONE-SIDED FEUD WITH LEBRON JAMES

HASKELL NEEDS HELP.
We're less than a month removed from Haskell Garrett getting shot through his cheeks for trying to break up a fight, and – hand up – I feel like we haven't given that story anywhere near enough attention due to *gestures at the rest of 2020*.

For example, I had absolutely no idea that he's had a GoFundMe set up since Sept. 4 to help raise money for the massive medical costs brought on by a bullet wound through the mouth.

Haskell Garrett, a Bishop Gorman High School Graduate from the class of 2017 (3- Time Football National Champions). Haskell is a beautiful soul inside and out. He inspires and motivates all those who cross his path. On Sunday, August 30th while walking in Columbus. Ohio, Haskell tried to stop an altercation between a man and woman he did not know and was senselessly shot in the face by the suspect. Fortunately, he is recovering at home. The OSU Wexner Medical Center conducted intensive surgery on his cheek. Thankfully it was a miraculous through and through bullet wound. Please help Haskell pay for his medical bills which includes extensive surgery and dental implants as his teeth and tongue were severely damaged due to the bullet wound impact. Please Help a kind soul who tried to assist a terrified woman in danger. God Bless!

- This campaign is being conducted in conjunction with Ohio State Athletics and in accordance with the applicable NCAA legislation.
- Any funds raised over the cost of associated medical expenses will be donated to a charitable cause.

When I checked on Monday afternoon, it was just a few dollars shy of $7,000 – nowhere near the goal of $100,000. Maybe I overestimate that glorious 11W bump, but I think Buckeye Nation could do substantially better than that if they knew there was a Buckeye in need.

Make me correct!

Not sure why the university doesn't cover this.

Not sure why the university doesn't cover this.

I don't know that they can since it wasn't a football related injury. That being said a gofundme probably isn't aloud for a scholarship athlete either. Back in the day for sports related medical issues the player's insurance was used first then the school covered whatever was left so there was nothing out of pocket. For players that didn't have health insurance the school took out a policy for them. I think when I went to the hospital with a kidney stone the bill went to my parents since it wasn't related to the sport.

I think there's a difference between a normal medical issue and what happened to Garrett. Even so, I would bet nowadays, at least at Ohio State, athletes would have non-sport related medical issues covered. You think Ohio State would make Justin Fields pay for his own emergency appendectomy?

Some really promising news about his recovery....

Haskell Garrett's recovery seems to be going better than anyone expected.

Less than a month ago, the Buckeye defensive tackle suffered a gunshot wound to the face. Now, it seems like he might be able to return to the football field this year.

Meeting with the media on Tuesday evening, Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs expressed optimism about Garrett's recovery and a possible return to the field, indicating that he seems to be progressing even better than expected.

Coombs said he initially feared the injury could end his season or even his career, but no longer believes that will be the case.

“I think he’s probably not as far away as any of us would have thought, when you get shot in the face," Coombs said on Tuesday. "I would have thought season over, career over, and I don’t think that’s true.”

As Garrett continues his recovery, his family is seeking donations on GoFundMe to help cover his extensive medical costs, which includes "extensive surgery and dental implants as his teeth and tongue were severely damaged due to the bullet wound impact."

The family notes the the GoFundMe is in conjunction with Ohio State Athletics and in accordance with the applicable NCAA legislation, and that any donated funds exceeding the cost of medical expenses will be donated to charity.

“He’s doing well, all things considered,” Day said of Garrett, who suffered facial injuries when he was shot on Aug. 30 while attempting to break up an argument between a man and a woman he did not know. “He’s very, very lucky. Very tough moment for all of us, very scary moment, but we’re happy to say that he’s doing well and he’s on the road to recovery.”

Day said he is hopeful that Garrett will be able to return to practice in the near future, though he will only be able to practice in a limited capacity at first.

“We’re hoping to get Haskell back here pretty soon so he can start practicing,” Day said. “It’s going to be a little while before he can actually go through contact, but we think we’re gonna get him back too, so that will be huge.”

Day did not provide a timetable for when he expects Garrett to be able to play in the games for the Buckeyes this fall.

As for Garrett, a GoFundMe being conducted in compliance with Ohio State and NCAA rules has now raised over $30,000 for his medical care. The campaign has a target goal of $100,000, and all funds that exceed the cost of Garrett's treatment will be donated to charity.

GREAT NEWS!!!

GARRETT PRACTICES

Just a little bit over a month ago, Haskell Garrett was hospitalized after suffering a gunshot wound to the face. He told Columbus Police officers that he was shot when trying to break up an argument between a man and a woman on Aug. 31.

He was back on the field on Saturday, practicing with his fellow defensive tackles and showing no limitations in the time the team allowed the media to watch practice.

On his radio show two weeks ago, Day said Garrett was “doing well, all things considered” and mentioned Ohio State expected to get him back onto the practice field “pretty soon.” He did say then, however, that he would not be able to participate in contact drills initially.

Provided Garrett can play this season, he’ll be in line to see regular playing time at the 3-technique defensive tackle position.
