DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

From what I understand the DL vets have made major improvements across the board + no major injuries. I know Coach Heacock is happy and the probability of Goebel redshirting seems to be rising as well. Garrett might prefer to RS as opposed to playing a handful of plays ea. game thereby using up a year's eligibility to play sparingly especially looking long term and the possibility of being an impact player for his 3rd, 4th & 5th season's.

Rooming with Dex L. has benefited Garrett particularly in terms of following Dex's progress as a former RS freshman to this (Soph.) season as he will impact the interior D-line. Garrett has been very grateful to have the veteran DL share their knowledge / experience making this "transistion to the big league" a bit easier especially digesting the playbook.

All I can say is wow. With Mobley going down and the DT play last year I thought Garrett was going to play for sure. This is good news for the team and shows what a smart kid Garrett is. He is going to be special when it is all said and done. (apprently in 5 years)

Good stuff...we all know Garrett is player, so why not have him even longer is possible? I like it. Also, two hwt. state champion wrestlers in the same room...I hope they get along, talk about dangerous
Thanks XP - great info as always. So, if I'm reading this correctly, Garrett doesn't mind the idea of RSing?
Not at all!!! When I asked Garrett about this recently he replied "It does not matter one way or the other, whatever the coaches think is best" (Which is typical nonchalant "Garrett")

Quite honestly in March of 2007 (Garrett's 1st visit to OSU) I asked the coaches if they planned to RS Garrett if he were to commit and AT THAT TIME they claimed to have no intention's to RS Garrett (Assuming he arrived this past June fully prepared...which I feel he has).
They're reply surprised me (maybe Garrett as well) as we just assumed that 95%+ of incoming freshmen would automatically redshirt given the talent / depth of a perenial BCS powerhouse. I DO NOT feel we were decieved in any way, shape or form..rather I believe that the veteran D-lineman improved tremendously to this date and IMO this ultimately benefits the DEF. / TEAM and in the big scheme will end up being a blessing towards Garrett's college football career if he uses this yr. to learn the system while continuing to grow / mature physically. He has enjoyed learning & getting to know the veteran D-lineman and is grateful for their willingness to help him.

Every time I see Goebel's name I think of the old Goebel beer.

According to wikipedia, Goebel had a rooster for a mascot at one point. That rooster's name: Brewster's Rooster.

It certainly is a pleasure to have someone like Garrett on the team. A lot of the highly rated incoming players seem to feel they they are "owed" a lot, instead of actually earning what playing time they receive. Garrett appears to be a first rate person, along with his considerable football talent. I wish you could convey to him that a lot of OSU fans love the kind of person he is on and off the field. Thanks for all the info!

Unnecessary to convey fan's loyalty as Garrett has been in absolute "AWE" of the Buckeye Nation and the alumni from coast to coast. Prior to Garrett verbally commiting last yr. numerous BUC fans wished Garrett the best WHEREVER he ended up and this spoke loudly as to the quality, character & dignity of loyal buckeye fans as they truly wanted Garrett to succeed with whatever school he chose (Now this may have differred if he was scUM bound!!!) The Integrity of the Staff, Players & Fans CANNOT be matched in the NCAA which is why the Goebel's know Garrett is at the perfect place for an education and successfull sports career
