DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

He has been lifting 5-6X / wk., going to CORE-1 Speed Camp 2-3X / wk. He is a solid 280 lbs. and did not want to put any "dead" weight on mainly due to the fact that the coaches have told him they plan to use him at BOTH DT & DE (Not just DT which most everyone has assumed) Been a lot of talk about Bucks D-Line being all 300 lb+ and I think in a year or two Garrett will play @ this weight...But for now HE IS VERY COMFORTABLE & CONFIDENT at his current weight given he is quicker & stronger than ever. I honestly have a hard time picturing him getting consistently manhandled by any college O-Lineman despite his lack of college football experience (which is where his wrestling background pays dividends!!)
its pretty typical for jimmy heacock to bring in guys and play them at de and dt, then slide them in. but he still uses those guys on the edge from time to time. heacocks a very very good coach...

Link to Vico's "Better Know a Buckeye" segment on www.ourhonordefend.com. He is working his way through the 08 class by recapping the recruiting process and assessing the player's attributes. Excellent series on a newer site.

Miscellany:
  • His nickname appears to be ?The Gladiator?. It works, but I don?t know the origin of the nickname. I?m guessing it?s a function of alliteration.

I know someone here on BP came up with it. Can anyone find the original post?

Heacock says that Garrett is looking good, but isn't sure if he'll break into the depth chart this year.

Incoming freshmen Garret Goebel at defensive tackle is also turning some heads.

"Goebel is going to be a really good player. He's really impressive as a freshman. He's a state wrestling champ and one of those guys you like. He stays on his feet. Whether he can crack into the depth chart, really I doubt it to be honest with you but down the road he's really going to be special," said Heacock.

"Garett Goebel is fighting those double teams, he's getting low, he;s getting better every day," added Abdallah.

I would love to see the vets like Abdallah, Denlinger, etc. step up. Great to hear that Garrett is doing well though and I have no doubts he will be a great player here.

From what I understand the DL vets have made major improvements across the board + no major injuries. I know Coach Heacock is happy and the probability of Goebel redshirting seems to be rising as well. Garrett might prefer to RS as opposed to playing a handful of plays ea. game thereby using up a year's eligibility to play sparingly especially looking long term and the possibility of being an impact player for his 3rd, 4th & 5th season's.

Rooming with Dex L. has benefited Garrett particularly in terms of following Dex's progress as a former RS freshman to this (Soph.) season as he will impact the interior D-line. Garrett has been very grateful to have the veteran DL share their knowledge / experience making this "transistion to the big league" a bit easier especially digesting the playbook.
