DT Eddrick Houston (All B1G, National Champion)

I don’t think you’ve expected too much. 5 star kid, we hear every year how well he’s doing in the off season and then he disappears.

Part of me wonders if he should just drop 20lb and be a heavy DE?
This is why I pay little attention to Spring practice and fall camp reports. This occurs every season with multiple players

Eddrick Houston Credits Mentality Switch To Recently Improved Play: “I Want to Be the Best 3-Tech in the Nation”

Eddrick Houston got into the backfield often against Iowa, and each time he did, he flexed his muscles in celebration.

A week later, he screamed out of his spot on the defensive interior against Maryland, once again getting to the backfield at will and letting everyone around him know he was having his way.

The defensive tackle got off to a slow start in 2026, notching only three total tackles in the first four games. Now, he’s making a big impact, tallying four total tackles in each of the last two games.

“Just intensity, and being able to lock in a little bit more than what I was before,” Houston said postgame about what has changed for him.

Houston credited his improved play to a change in his mentality.

"My mindset has changed — I feel like my mindset has just changed in general," Houston said. "From where I was to now, I want to be the best 3-tech in the nation."

What caused his mentality to shift?

"You guys," Houston said with a slight smirk, referring to the media as he scanned his gaze to the press who surrounded him in the back of Ohio State's media room.

"Just me knowing I can do better for y'all," Houston said about the media.

Houston didn't say whether he had receipts of the media saying things about him that could have led to his retort. But something clearly resonated with him for him to bring up reporters as part of his answer to what inspired a change for him.

But the other part of his answer, and this one is certainly more important, is worth noting.

“Not just (the media), but my team also,” Houston said. “They need me. So I'm glad I'm able to step up like I have been these couple of weeks.”

"We're challenging guys to maximize everything that they have. And I thought he showed a lot of things (against Iowa) that were very encouraging. And so now the challenge for him is to consistently do it over and over again, week after week," Ryan Day said of Houston Wednesday after practice. "Because that's what being great is, and everybody comes here to be great. That's the challenge now, that competitive stamina, the ability to play at that level week in and week out for the entire game ... I think he played some good football this past week. So that was encouraging, and certainly had a lot to do with our win and our ability to stop the run."

When asked if he's playing angry right now, Houston replied, "Oh yeah, from the first snap to the last one."

That anger and internal motivation are amplifying his own play and the play of the entire defensive line around him. But he's not satisfied.

"I got another gear, and I'm going to keep working week in and week out to get better and better," Houston said.
