DT Doug Worthington (Official Thread)

Defensive lineman Doug Worthington wore a white top and white tights, which he said made him look bigger.

"Black slims you up. White makes you pop out," he said.

Maybe it worked. He was pleased with a 35-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot, 2-inch broad jump and 40 times in the 4.9 to 5.0 range.

Doug Worthington felt he did well on the day. He had a 35.5" vertical and a 10?1" broad jump, which are pretty good for a guy his size. He was running the forty on tweaked calves, but was told some had him in the 4.9s, though while watching him run, I saw Eric Lichter tell him 5.+ on both runs. On where he feels he will play at the next level, he has a couple of ideas.

?I can play a 3-4 defensive end,? he said, while mulling his options. ?I can bulk up. I can be 300-pounds easy. This 290 is actually pretty light. Anywhere they want to put me. I played every position at Ohio State. I can play end, I can play nose tackle--though I?d probably need to gain 15-20 pounds. I?m willing to do anything.?

He has talked to Miami, Minnesota, Arizona, Atlanta and Indianapolis.

Doug Worthington (DT, 6-5, 290) ran a 4.99 and 5.04 40-yard-dash. Worthington also posted a 35.5 vertical jump and 10.1 broad jump. He did not bench due to a strained pectoral muscle.

Ohio State defensive lineman Doug Worthington recently visited the Buffalo Bills, according to a source close to the program with knowledge of the situation.

Worthington is an athletic 6-foot-5, 292-pounder with 5.02 speed in the 40-yard dash and a 35 1/2 inch vertical leap and a 10-01 broad jump.

Worthington played in the East-West Shrine all-star game.

The honorable-mention All-Big Ten Conference selection, registering 42 tackles last season.

He has been projected anywhere from the fifth round to the seventh round by draft analysts.

Steelers dial up Worthington
St. Francis graduate picked in seventh round; Cowboys to sign fullback Gronkowski
By Allen Wilson
NEWS SPORTS REPORTER
Updated: April 24, 2010

Doug Worthington had been in contact with the Pittsburgh Steelers since the NFL Scouting Combine in February and they called him before and during the draft. He also heard from the Baltimore Ravens.

The Buffalo native and Ohio State standout didn't want to get his hopes up. He knew from talking to former teammates that the team that shows the most interest isn't always the one that picks you.

But this time, that's exactly what happened as Worthington was chosen by the Steelers in the seventh round on Saturday.

"It was pretty stressful, to be honest with you," said Worthington, who became a blue-chip high school prospect at St. Francis after starring at Turner-Carroll. "I just wanted to get picked up. It's been my dream to play in the NFL since I was a youngster. There were times I wasn't sure if I would make it, but I just kept the faith and it happened. It could have been the last pick I still would have been happy. It was a great experience. It's a moment I'll cherish for the rest of my life."

The 6-foot-5, 292-pound Worthington was a fifth-year senior at Ohio State, where he played defensive tackle and had 42 tackles and two sacks in 2009. He projects as a defensive end in the Steelers' 3-4 defense.

The Buckeyes play a similar scheme, so the Steelers believe Worthington can make the transition to end.

"He has the body to play our five technique, and he's just a nice-size guy to have at that position," said Kevin Colbert, the Steelers' director of football operations.

Worthington is expected to compete for a backup spot behind veteran starters Brett Keisel and Aaron Smith. Both are over 30 and combine more than 20 years experience.

Worthington plans to stick as close to them as possible.

"I've got some great guys there that have been playing defensive end for a long time that can teach me and mentor me for the next few years," he said. "There's going to be a learning curve to get through, but I'm very eager and willing to work as hard as I can to make my city proud and just make it happen."

Michael Lombardi (national football post) makes a comment in today's football blurbs that he thinks the Steelers should try and convert Worthington into an offensive lineman.

Says "he has all the right traits to be a 'good one' in time". He doesn't go into it any further, but I've never thought of DW as an o-line prospect.

I hear he also thought Dustin Fox should have been moved to safety.

Don?t dismiss defensive end Doug Worthington as an afterthought, Kiper said, even though the Steelers took the Ohio State product late in the seventh round.

?I think he?ll make the team,? Kiper said. ?Hustler, had a very productive year with the Buckeyes.?

James_Taipei: Which of the Steelers draft picks do you like the best?
Jerry Micco: Pouncey, certainly. And here's a long shot: Doug Worthington, the 7th-round pick from Ohio State. I think he's a very stout run stopper and will be a nice fit as a backup DE, perhaps taking over for Aaron Smith or Brett Keisel someday. Has the size at 6-5 and 292, and is a good football player. And the Steelers will add at least 10 pounds to his frame to get him up over 300, the right size for 3-4 DEs.

Steelers Agree to Terms With 7th Round DL Doug Worthington

The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a three-year deal with seventh-round defensive tackle Doug Worthington, a league source said.

Worthington's three-year deal is expected to include a signing bonus of slightly over $33,000, which would push the total value of his deal to over $1.248 million dollars.

The Steelers are one of a handful of NFL teams who prefer to sign their mid-to-late round picks to three-year contracts.

Chosen with the 242nd overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the 6-5, 292-pound defensive lineman from Ohio State University started 35 games for the Buckeyes, totaling 103 tackles, including 12 for a loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks.

Worthington set career-highs in 2009 with 42 tackles and 2 quarterback sacks.

A protoypical "5" technique end, Worthington is a bit of a long-shot to crack the Steelers? 53-man roster, and could be headed to the practice squad.
