DT Doug Worthington (Official Thread)

Just getting it done

Another defensive lineman who never really seems to ?wow? but has the ability to win battles inside is Ohio State DL Doug Worthington. Worthington possesses an above-average first step off the snap and has the ability to consistently beat reach blocks inside and find the ball on plays away from his frame. Plus, he displayed the length and lateral quickness to be productive during one-on-one drills. He lacks ideal size for the DT position at only 288 pounds, but he can be effective inside as long as opposing linemen don?t get their hands on him initially off the snap. Worthington plays angry, never shuts up and seems to have some real leadership qualities to him. He?s a guy who won?t get much love on draft day but will find a way to play in the league for 10 years.

Film study has five prospects rising
DB McCourty, DT Thomas moving up draft boards

Scouts Inc.

This is the time of year when we at Scouts Inc. grind through game tape on senior prospects, updating existing player evaluations and writing complete profiles on seniors who emerged as legitimate prospects during the college season.

Our goal is to have a film evaluation completed on each of the participants at the upcoming NFL combine, plus any addition prospects that we deem worthy of draft consideration at this point, and there are always a handful of prospects who catch us by surprise during this process.

There are always a handful of prospects that catch us by surprise during this process. Last year, DE Robert Ayers (No. 18 overall, Broncos) and OT Sebastian Vollmer (second round, Patriots) were examples of players who shot up our draft board just before the combine and continued to ascend during pre-draft workouts.

Here's a look at five prospects who have caught our eye during recent film evaluations, along with a few teams that might have interest if the price is right:

4. Ohio State DE Doug Worthington: Worthington is not a great athlete and did very little to garner attention at the East-West Shrine game. However, after studying more film, it's obvious he has the size, strength and discipline to contribute -- certainly in a rotation and perhaps eventually as a starter -- as a 5-technique (3-4 defensive end) in the NFL. Look for Worthington to come off the board early on Day 3.
Possible homes: Denver, Miami, Pittsburgh, New England, San Diego and New York Jets

People like Todd McAssHat and Mark May are the reason I rarely watch ESPN anymore other than for highlights of games or the games themselves.

To me Doug was a huge part of our defensive success this year. Some NFL team will be very lucky when they land him.

Worthington Stock Soaring After Shrine Game
By Brandon Castel

A three-year starter on the defensive line, Worthington played in three BCS bowl games, including the 2008 National Title game and the 2010 Rose Bowl. He went 4-0 against Michigan during his time in Columbus, but it was the first game he played outside a Buckeye uniform that has caused a stir amongst NFL scouts.

?I?ve gotten a lot of feedback,? Worthington said of his trip to Orlando for the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 23 rd.

?I competed well; I played very, very good. I got a sack and a couple tackles against the premier guards down there. I helped myself a lot as far as the weekend, just taking interviews and talking to coaching staffs and being a leader out there on the field.?

After running into some off-the-field issue before his junior season, Worthington developed into one of the most respected leaders on the Ohio State defense. He was selected as a team captain for his senior season and helped anchor one of the best defensive lines in the country.

He is on verge of fulfilling his lifelong dream of playing in the National Football League, and yet for the first time in years, Worthington has spent little to no time looking at mock draft projections for this year.

?Usually I read it every year to see where my guys are going, but I might have looked at it once (this year). I don?t want to look at it,? the New York native said.

?Sometimes you think about it a little too much and you worry about where you?re going to go. Especially if you look at some internet sites or you hear this person talking or that person talking. They don?t mention your name or they do mention your name, it?s something that can get to you real quick. You just have to make sure you?re putting yourself in the best position to compete.?

Before the Shrine game, Worthington was being talked about as a mid to low round pick, but his stock appears to be soaring after a fine showing in front of NFL scouts and coaches in Orlando.

?I?ve gotten mid third. That?s one of my best grades and I think that?s close to what I can be,? Worthington said.

?I would love to get early third, that would be a blessing but wherever I go it really doesn?t matter. Just going to the next level is huge and I want to go out there and compete on a team.?

OSU defensive linemen Thaddeus Gibson and Doug Worthington were next to work out, doing their bench presses Sunday. It was then that Worthington suffered a strained muscle.

Although it is not believed to be serious, he decided not to participate in the rest of the drills for precautionary reasons, focusing on being healthy for OSU's pro day March12.

You get a lot of agents contacting you by e-mail or calling, all wanting to represent you, sell you a dream. I was looking for a good fit. Roy Hall recommended I speak with his guy and I did.

I met with a few of the agents. The guy I went with wasn?t trying to sell you a dream. He works hard for his clients and impressed me. I?m not a big guy on shopping. I just liked him and went with him.

You have to see who fits right and what he can do for you now. As a rookie coming into the NFL you?re going to get drafted but there isn?t a lot of negotiation that goes on. That only happens if you?re a free agent. I just wanted to make sure I had someone who?s willing to work and help me before the draft. I want a hard worker who?s willing to put in the work. I think I got him.

Combine Week: Doug Worthington
02/24/2010

The interview process at the Combine is one of the biggest things. You only work out one day, lift one day, and you do the drills. The biggest things in the Combine are the test and meeting with coaches, scouts, and GM’s to answer questions, talk to them and show what you can do for their team. I feel comfortable because of everything I have learned at OSU, through football and while graduating with a communication degree. I’ve done interviews with media, so that helps. I also did interviews at the All-Star game in Orlando a few weeks ago and got some great feedback and tips there. The interview process was a little more laid back there but at the Combine it’s going to be more business-like.

Eric Lichter is a nut when it comes to training. He lives it and breathes it but that is what makes him great. He has trained players like Troy Smith, Lebron James and Thaddeus Gibson while they were in high school. He’s been working with us for quite a while now. Lichter is a nut when it comes to protein and what we are putting in our body too. We eat about 3-4 times a day and we are always conscious of our diet and eating schedule.

Dreaming: Doug Worthington
02/24/2010

I’ve been dreaming about being a professional football player since I was playing little league football. I didn’t understand the process and knew I needed to get bigger but I always wanted to compete. I played Madden with my father and we always talked about being in the game and wanting to help my family out a lot. I’m feeling I’m getting close. Just getting your foot in the door isn’t enough. I have to compete and show I’m a hard worker, train hard, work hard, go out there and impress some people.

I was hoping to get an invitation to the Combine in Indianapolis. The Combine is pretty special since only the best players get invited. I was a little scared because I didn’t hear from them. I guess my e-mail was down so I had a call asking me for information on myself. After a couple of minutes I was told I was invited. I’m looking forward to it. When they called and invited me it was a big relief. I called my agent and he was excited. The next week I got an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine all-star game and it all rolled in quick and it all was a blessing.

I think it’s very possible for me with a great Combine and some great interviews that the mid 3rd round would be beautiful. Being drafted is a blessing altogether so I’m coming close to my dream right now.
