DT Dexter Larimore (official thread)

Question for the knowledgeable posters on this board: has Larimore progressed as expected this season? Our DL play has gotten a lot better it seems like in recent weeks and I'm wondering if that's the result of some of the young guys hitting the development curve. I don't really watch the DL closely so your opinions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just focusing on Larimore here but he has been playing basically with one arm according to that last article most of the year..............pretty tough.....

We gotta' get these guys healthy. Denlinger, Rose, Wilson, and Larimore seem to really struggle with injuries.

TACKLING ART
Buckeyes' Larimore is quite a masterpiece

Ohio State sophomore Dexter Larimore displays his work, Outburst, at an NCAA convention. His mother, Theresia, operated a studio and taught pottery and ceramics.

COLUMBUS - The recruitment of Dexter Larimore called for Ohio State to get a little creative and even a smidgen artsy.

Like most elite athletes being wooed by the Buckeyes, Larimore was shown the posh football training facilities, the stadium so steeped in history, and all the trophies and photos of Ohio State icons.

But closing the deal with Larimore, the Buckeyes had to sculpt an approach rarely used when 300-pound defensive tackles are considering a wardrobe of scarlet and gray.

"Have you seen our art department?" the Buckeyes asked.

OSU coach Jim Tressel and his brother, Dick, an assistant on the staff who was in charge of recruiting the northern Indiana area where Larimore lived, visited Merrillville High School and talked to the football coach about Dexter Larimore, the all-state lineman.

They also spoke with the wrestling coach about Dexter Larimore, the state champion heavyweight who was ranked No. 1 in the nation as a senior. And they no doubt talked to the track coach about the two-time state qualifier in the shot put.
But when the Tressels walked into the ceramics class one day, that's where they found their guy.

"I was working on a big project when they came in to talk with the art teacher," Larimore said. "It was neat, but I don't think art class is somewhere they have to go very often when they are out recruiting."

Defensive tackle Larimore has played like a starter for OSU

Comments

July 29, 2009

By John Mutka, Post-Tribune senior correspondent
CHICAGO -- Ohio State's depth makes it dificult to define starters, especially on the defensive front.
Case in point: Merrillville's Dexter Larimore backed up eight-game starter Cameron Heyward at defensive tackle, but coach Jim Tressel considers him a regular.
"I don't remember how many times he played the first play," Tressel said Tuesday at the Big Ten kickoff, "but Dexter was always a 40-plus play guy. When you play that much you're a starter."
Last year the 300-pound junior opened only against Youngstown State and USC, but appeared in all 13 games. He figured in 15 tackles, including 3.5 for losses, to earn his second letter with the Big Ten co-champions.
"Dexter's a warrior inside," said Tressel, who has guided the Buckeyes to seven straight bowls. "He's a good leader, everything we dreamed about and then some. He's highly competitive."
So are the Buckeyes, though their 10-3 record included a 24-21 loss to Texas in the Fiesta Bowl. It was their third straight postseason setback. On the plus side of Tressel's 83-19 record, eight Buckeyes have been drafted in the first round in the last three years.

I met Dex's family at the spring game. They were easy to spot with "Larimore" jerseys on. I talked with them on the way out of the stadium. They were a good group of people, real salt of the earth. I had the impression that they took the John Deere to the stadium but I mean that in a good way. One more reason for me to root for the kid, as if there weren't enough already.

Dexter got a heck of a lot more snaps than I expected today.

  • Even when the DL looked really winded, the starters stayed out there, which was a surprise.
  • We played a heck of a lot of looks with Larimore at NG today, or starting at NG before switching to a 3 technique.
  • Finally, Larimore is clearly higher in the pecking order than I expected.
Put them all together, and it looked like he was on the field all day.

Makes you wonder what the point of having depth is if you don't use it, no?

Well I mean we did rotate (seemingly) every DE on the roster. And Denlinger got a bushel of minutes.

Yeah I haven't rewatched it or anything ( I doubt that I will) but I just remember thinking that to myself when Navy was driving and you could see the DL sucking wind.
