DT Cameron Heyward (6x Pro Bowl, 3x All Pro, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Cam was the one I wanted back most awesome news. Though Gibson is a beast, I think Williams is a similar player and could be primed for a breakout year. Cam was the only one I saw as immediately irreplacable. Great news!

That appears to be next year's depth chart without the graduating seniors, and was updated the day of their final game (12/30).

Garrett Graham, Brian Schofield & Chris Maragos are noticeably absent from that list, along with many other backups:

Thanks for that catch. The last thing I want to is to spread misinformation. It does seem, after closer inspection, that the Badgers do indeed return a very high percentage of starters for next season. For whatever reason, it also appears that they persuade quite a few players to redshirt each year.

Ohio State football: Heyward's decision leads Chekwa, Homan to stay
Friday, January 8, 2010
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Cameron Heyward might be the world's biggest domino.

After the Ohio State defensive lineman told his teammates he was planning to return for his senior season, two other key junior defenders decided to follow suit.

Linebacker Ross Homan and cornerback Chimdi Chekwa said yesterday that Heyward's return played a factor in their decisions.

"A big role," Chekwa said. "Defensive linemen are probably a cornerback's best friend. They get pressure on the quarterback, and I think our D-line is going to be great next year. Our linebackers are going to be good, so it was a big part of my situation."

Homan called Heyward "a huge, huge asset to us to come back. As soon as I talked to him and he said he was coming back, I was all for that. Cam has an ability to take over a game himself."

So that means six starters will return from a unit that ranked fifth nationally in total defense this season (262.3 yards a game) and sixth in scoring defense (12.5 points).

Defensive coordinator Jim Heacock returned from visiting a prospect and wondered whether he could have saved himself the trouble and just stayed home.

"(The news) was like a good day of recruiting, to get three guys back who have played so much for us," he said. "Obviously, it makes us feel good."

OSU football: Heyward picks fun over big paycheck
Sunday, January 24, 2010
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The NFL told Cameron Heyward he would be a second-round draft pick. He doesn't buy it.

"I think they just say that because they don't want to say first round and then have you not get drafted in the first round," Heyward said.

In other words, the Ohio State defensive end believes he could be an elite NFL player right now. Most offensive linemen who have faced him would probably agree.

By choosing not to enter the draft this spring as a junior, Heyward passed up millions of dollars.

Coach Jim Tressel has said that if a player is going to be a first-rounder, it's probably smart to leave.

But here's what dollars and common sense don't take into account: Heyward is having too much fun being a college student.

"I'm just a 20-year-old, and (the NFL) is a lot of responsibility to put on a 20-year-old," Heyward said. "I'm enjoying college -- classes and everything. I'm enjoying the guys here, I'm moving toward something I want, which is my degree, and I just like the overall atmosphere here. It's a great experience."

Defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said he was not surprised that Heyward decided to stay.

"Cam really enjoys college life," Heacock said. "I knew his passion for Ohio State and college football. He enjoys every game, it seems."

OSU's Heyward aims for total domination
February, 24, 2010
By Adam Rittenberg

Perhaps more than any other Ohio State player, Cameron Heyward rose to the occasion in 2009.

In two of the Buckeyes' biggest games -- against USC and Penn State -- Heyward looked like the best player on the field.

Cameron Heyward had some of his biggest moments against Ohio State's toughest opponents last season.

He manhandled USC's celebrated offensive line in a Sept. 12 contest, recording seven tackles, two for a loss and a sack, while playing both defensive line positions. Ohio State lost the game, but Heyward played brilliantly. Two months later at Penn State, Heyward once again had his way with an opposing offensive line, recording 11 tackles, including three for a loss and two sacks, en route to winning National Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Big games in big moments put Heyward on the map in 2010. But when he steps on the field this fall, he doesn't plan to wait for the spotlight to shine his way.

"One thing I want to become is more consistent," Heyward said. "I can have some breakout games, but I want it to be every game. I want to dominate games from the get-go. Any defensive lineman can have a great performance, but if you can have a consistent base and build up a name for yourself and show you can be dominant against any offensive lineman, that?s one of the goals for me."

Heyward Hopes to Elevate His Game in 2010...and Everyone Else's.
By Tony Gerdeman

If the Ohio State Buckeyes are playing for the BCS National Championship on January 10, 2011, it will be in large part because of what took place on January 5, 2010. It was on that day - to the delight of Buckeye fans, players, and especially coaches - that junior defensive lineman Cameron Heyward made his intentions known that he would be returning for his senior season at Ohio State.

Heyward posseses he ability to disrupt every single snap which caused offenses to focus on his whereabouts constantly last year. Now- unfortunately for them - his whereabouts will be in Columbus for one more season.

Heyward is coming off of a year in which he led the team in sacks (6.5) and finished second in tackles for loss (10.0). Many believed Heyward to be a first-round NFL draft pick. Heyward, however, didn?t think too much about it.

?I wouldn?t say I was really close to leaving,? he admitted. ?I have a great family here and I love these guys. I want to help them in any way possible and help them get what they want - a National Championship.?

He knows that championships don?t just happen. It needs to be the singular, solitary focus of an entire football team. Now that he?s a senior, he?s looking to lead by example.

?You?re a senior now,? he said. ?You feel that entitlement of ?This is your baby and you?ve got to raise it.? These seniors, we come out here every day and we?re trying to push every guy. We want them to go out right. It?s a big challenge for the seniors coming up. You want to live up to that reputation. You don?t want to be the first team to not win that Big Ten Championship.?

Buckeyes are happy about Heyward's return

BY RUSTY MILLER ? Associated Press ? April 7, 2010

COLUMBUS -- Ohio State defensive lineman Cameron Heyward has some advice for Buckeyes basketball star Evan Turner, who is pondering whether he'll return for his senior season.

"Enjoy. Do whatever makes you happy," said Heyward, who toyed with the idea in January of jumping into the NFL draft a year early. "If you want to be in college, be in college. But he's in a blessed situation right now. I want to be like him."

There's no word yet on whether Turner, the consensus national player of the year, will be back. One thing is certain: Heyward's decision to return buoyed a lot of spirits around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

The defense might have been a major concern had it lost Heyward, who developed into a first-rate pass rusher in 2009 for the Buckeyes, who went 11-2, won their fifth consecutive Big Ten title and capped it with a Rose Bowl victory. As it is, he's the only starting defensive lineman back for the Buckeyes, but they have several players who saw substantial time in 2009.

Heyward, the son of the late former NFL running back Craig "Ironhead" Heyward and stepson of ex-Wisconsin basketball star Cory Blackwell, downplayed his return as essential to the Buckeyes' grand plan. He said it was just as important linebackers Ross Homan and Brian Rolle and cornerback Chimdi Chekwa decided to return rather than turn pro.

"I wouldn't (give) all the credit to me. We've got guys like Ross and Brian and Chimdi who all came back too," he said. "If we all didn't come back, I don't think we'd have a shot. But we all knew that we'd have a great shot of doing this and it's going to be fun."

Heyward still loving life at Ohio State
April, 16, 2010
By Adam Rittenberg

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Cameron Heyward still enjoys being a kid at Ohio State.

He might be the first college football star in history to gush about new facilities and not be referring to a weight room, a players' lounge or some other addition to the detached athletic complex.

"Being on campus, all these new facilities we got are great," he said last week. "You know, the new [student] union."

You mean college football players spend time on campus, at the student union, with other, um, students?

Apparently Heyward does. And he loves it.

"Everybody always tells me you're only in college once," he said. "And I want to make the most out of it."

Three Big Ten players in 2011 mock draft - Big Ten Blog - ESPN

The Big Ten had three players selected in the first round of last week's NFL draft. According to Todd McShay, the same thing will take place next April.

McShay's first (of many) mock drafts for 2011 features three Big Ten selections, including two players going in the top 5. And just like the 2010 draft, the Big Ten will have two defensive linemen and an offensive tackle picked in the first round.

Here's how McShay sees things shaking out:

  • No. 4: Iowa DE Adrian Clayborn to Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • No. 5: Ohio State DL Cameron Heyward to Cleveland Browns
  • No. 21: Wisconsin LT Gabe Carimi to Atlanta Falcons
I like the idea of that happening!
