DT Adolphus "Diesel" Washington (Official Thread)

Agreed.

Washington, 10 games, 9 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 kick blocked

Freshman Simon, 13 games, 16 tackles, 4 TFL, 0.5 sacks, 1 PBU, 1 forced fumble

I love what John Simon did for Ohio State but to say that Washington can't fill his shoes in production is silly at this point in time.

That's the thing about Ohio State, Washington could turn out to be the best defensive lineman we've ever had, and he'll never replace John Simon. Of course if he did become the best defensive lineman we've ever had, we wouldn't ever be able to replace him either.

Just off the top of my head I can name 20 guys that we've never replaced based on what they brought to the "entire" table. From what a player brings to the field in terms of skill set though Id say Ginn IMO has been the hardest guy to replace in recent memory.

Since it's March, you think we'll ever replace Craft?

Washington stepping up

There are seven starting spots up for grabs on defense, including six in the front seven, but it appears that sophomore Adolphus Washington is laying claim to one of the line spots.

?The guy I have seen making plays all over the place is Adolphus Washington,? senior starting safety C.J. Barnett said. ?He?s doing his thing, which is great to see, being a young guy stepping up in there. We?re expecting a lot out of him. We?re counting on him, we?re counting on all of them.?

Returning strong safety Christian Bryant, also a senior, concurred, and said Washington has company.

?Adolphus Washington and Noah Spence, they look incredible right now to me,? Bryant said. ?Those guys, they don?t stop going. It?s like we have another John Simon just stepping right up ? not quite as old or experienced like John Simon, but they?re doing a pretty good job.?

Ohio State football: Washington playing in big shadow
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch? Thursday April 11, 2013

If Adolphus Washington doesn?t go full-throttle every play, he hears the nonstop barking ? and senses the ghost of his predecessor.

The pressure is on all of Ohio State?s defensive linemen as the Buckeyes replace four departed starters. But how would you like to be the guy expected to replace end John Simon, the Big Ten?s Defensive Player of the Year who was known for his relentless work ethic on and off the field. Coach Urban Meyer practically wanted to adopt Simon as his second son.

Now fill those shoes, Washington. That, of course, isn?t exactly the truth. No player has to embody the qualities of the player he is succeeding. But standards have been set, and Washington knows he must live up to them.

Talent will not be an issue. Washington, who at 6 feet 3 has bulked up to 290 pounds and has uncommon quickness for a player that size. He and fellow sophomore-to-be Noah Spence have the ability to be beasts on the edge.

Washington made an impact in spot duty last year. Against Michigan, he beat All-America left tackle Taylor Lewan for a fumble-causing sack, one of his three sacks in 2012. But as is often the case with players who were as dominant in high school as Washington was at Cincinnati Taft, it takes time to realize that maximum effort is required on every play in college.

?That was one of my biggest problems last year,? Washington said. ?I didn?t go out and play hard every play. Everyone knows that?s what John Simon does.?

As if that ever slips his mind, defensive line coach Mike Vrabel is there to remind him.

?Mike Vrabel is coaching the heck out of that kid,? Meyer said. ?He doesn?t take a step without hearing Vrabel inside him. The first half of spring I wasn?t buying that stock. I?m buying it now. He?s done a nice job. Adolphus Washington could potentially be a great player at Ohio State.?

Ohio State Buckeye Adolphus Washington, replacing John Simon on the defensive line, is one to watch at Saturday's spring game

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Defensive lineman Adolphus Washington has just two things to show in Ohio State's spring game at Cincinnati's Paul Brown Stadium on Saturday.

One, as a Cincinnati native, is to shine as an example of what the Buckeyes can do recruiting there. It's an area of the state where in recent years they haven't snagged as many players as they have from other parts of Ohio, like, for instance, the Cleveland area.

“I wasn't here in years past but I heard a lot that we'd never done well in Cincinnati. I think we're doing great. I think we're killing it,” OSU coach Urban Meyer said Wednesday. “I think Adolphus Washington could be a great player at Ohio State.”

Two, Washington has to prove he can replace the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the guy that Meyer compared to Tim Tebow over and over a year ago as one of favorite players – John Simon.

“As far as my pass rush, I'm pretty much like him, but I need to get a little more aggressive in the run game like he was,” Washington said.

Is he a weight room monster like Simon, ready to lift before the sun rises?

“Ummmm, when I have to, yeah,” Washington said. “Once I saw John was going, I was right behind him.”

OSU's Washington follows Simon's lead

Adolphus Washington is a huge part of Ohio State's future on defense, but he hasn't forgotten the Buckeyes' recent past.

Asked to identify his top goal during spring practice, Washington made sure to give a nod to the man who showed him the way in 2012.

"To fill the shoes of John Simon," Washington told ESPN.com. "I know those are some big shoes to fill. I'm just working my hardest to try and do that."

Adolphus Washington knows he has some big shoes to fill as he replaces John Simon at defensive end.

Many would say Washington, a 6-foot-3, 292-pound defensive end, boasts more natural ability than Simon, the 2012 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He undoubtedly came to Columbus as a more decorated recruit, rated as the nation's 65th-best player and No. 7 defensive end in the 2012 class, according RecruitingNation. (Simon had no national ranking when he arrived in 2009.)

But Simon maximized every ounce of talent he had during an exceptional Buckeyes career, earning respect from teammates, fans and coaches, including Urban Meyer, who put Simon in a select category of players he has coached (he hangs Simon's and Tim Tebow's jerseys in his office at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center). He attacked the weight room and practices the same way he did the game field on fall Saturdays, and everyone took notice, including a young defensive lineman from Cincinnati.

"His competitive spirit, that's the biggest thing," Washington said. "I'm pretty athletic, and I've got a lot of things God blessed me with to play football, but his competitive spirit is what I take away the most."

No one though had a bigger day than former Taft standout Adolphus Washington, who had four sacks and established himself as a starter on the defensive line, going into fall practices and the Aug. 31 opener against Buffalo.

?I finally got a chance to play in front of the people that don?t get to make it to Columbus or wherever else we play,? said Washington, a former Taft standout. ?Coach Lewis? speech I think it put a real good strong point in there about what we need to do to win the national championship.?
But there were two areas of Washington?s game that needed improvement ? becoming a better run stopper and also giving the same maximum effort every play.

?In college, everybody plays hard every play. I?m still learning that,? he said. ?I?m pretty pleased with the progress we made, but there's a lot more we have to do.?

Adolphus Washington came on strong toward the end of spring practice.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Just a few days before the latest public offering, Urban Meyer did a bit of insider trading and handed out a hot tip.

The Ohio State coach was already buying what Adolphus Washington was selling as camp came to a close, heaping praise on the sophomore defensive end before the rest of the country could get a glimpse at the progress he had made since last season with a grand unveiling in the spring game.

Meyer?s advice proved prophetic on a sunny afternoon in Cincinnati that was dominated by Washington?s power and strength as a pass rusher. The rising sophomore turned in a performance that would make any early investors in him quite pleased as the Buckeyes head into the summer conditioning program.

?I don?t know about the first half of spring,? Meyer said. ?I wasn?t buying that stock. But I?m buying it now.?

Scouts Inc.'s Kevin Weidl believes sophomore DE Adolphus Washington could emerge as a force on the edge for Ohio State.
Weidl also called attention to Noah Spence, who is more of a speed and explosion rusher. "Washington has some big time power," Weidl tweeted. He "gave Taylor Lewan all sorts of problems. Sack and had him off balance throughout the tape." The Buckeyes return plenty of talented players, but the team did lose Johnathan Hankins and John Simon along their defensive line. Jul 21
