Three selected to play in all-star football game

Martin Henderson, From Times Staff Reports
November 8, 2006

Linebacker Chris Galippo of Anaheim Servite, offensive tackle Martin Coleman of Huntington Beach Edison and defensive back Donovan Warren of Long Beach Poly have been selected to the West team for the Army All-American Bowl, Jan. 6 in San Antonio.

Galippo, 6 feet 2 and 235 pounds, is considered by many to be the best 17-year-old middle linebacker in California. He has committed to USC.

Coleman, 6-6 and 290, has also committed to play for the Trojans.

Warren, 6-1 and 180, is one of the top-rated defensive backs in the nation and has helped the Jackrabbits offense this season by taking a turn at running back for the first time in his playing career.

They join a West team that includes quarterback Jimmy Clausen and running back Marc Tyler of Westlake Village Oaks Christian, defensive lineman Brian Price of Los Angeles Crenshaw and linebacker Blaine Irby and defensive back Michael Williams of Ventura St. Bonaventure.

The all-star game, featuring 80 of the nation's top seniors, will be televised live at 10 a.m. by NBC.

Game jerseys will be presented to Coleman in an 8 a.m. ceremony Wednesday in Edison's gym and to Warren in an 11:25 a.m. ceremony Thursday in Poly's gym.

Poly's defense helps on both ends to beat Lakewood

By Dan Arritt, Times Staff Writer
November 10, 2006

The defensive stars led the way for Long Beach Poly again Thursday night, even helping produce a majority of the points.

Poly, ranked No. 9 in the Southland by The Times, held its seventh consecutive opponent to single digits and won its 15th straight Moore League title with a 35-9 victory over host Lakewood.

The three best defenders for the Jackrabbits also scored touchdowns. Jurrell Casey, a junior defensive lineman, scooped up a fumble on Lakewood's first offensive series and returned it five yards for a score.

Donovan Warren, one of the most highly recruited defensive backs in the nation, caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gabriel Thomas one play after the Lancers fumbled a kickoff return, giving the Jackrabbits a 21-3 lead with 21.9 seconds left in the first half.

Senior defensive lineman Kenny Rowe, who came into the game among the state leaders with 14 sacks, also scored on offense, securing a 14-yard touchdown reception from Thomas on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Poly a 28-3 lead.

Together, they helped limit the Lancers (7-3 overall, 5-1 in league) to 55 yards through the first three quarters.

"Our defense is definitely the leader," Poly Coach Raul Lara said. "It sets the tone."

Since the Jackrabbits (9-1, 6-0) lost their season opener, 9-7, to Santa Margarita, they have found some additional offensive weapons.

Senior running back Johnny Toloumu totaled only 50 yards in 17 carries in the first five games but has rushed for 618 carries in 69 carries over the last five. Against the Lancers, he rushed for a career-high 170 yards in 21 carries and scored a touchdown.

Senior wide receiver Bryshon Nellum, who won state track and field titles in the 200 and 400 meters in June, caught four passes for 35 yards, doubling his season reception total and yardage.

"Our team is coming together," Warren said. "Everybody is starting to meld."
