Donald Sterling and his comments

Exactly, what you do at home on your own time is your own business but if you want a job at my company you're going to conduct yourself in a professional manner. We're not in business to be "inclusive", we're in business to make money and if you can help us to do you you will be a valuable addition. We're not there to support your anti-social dysfunction.

But, man, the whole SYSTEM is dysfunctional! Why can't you have people that talk "black" (please forgive the bluntly racist description) running your store? Because then whitey won't shop there because it's full of thugs! And you just can't afford to alienate whitey because whitey has the money! You know what I mean? The racism (and sexism) is so ingrained into our culture and we cannot even see it because we grew up in it and our vision of what should be "normal" is so completely skewed by that.

I didn't land on Buckeye Planet.......Buckeye Planet landed on me!

Here's an idea, buy your own company and hire whoever you want.

Oh, so it's not possible for anyone to relate to someone else just because that othe person is of different ethnicity? So enlighten us as to just when can one person relate to another.

That's a fairly open-ended question implying that I don't think it's ever possible for one person to relate to another in a given situation. Since, for example, my father and mother are still married, I would find it difficult to relate to someone with divorced parents. But, because one of my close friends died in a car accident when I was younger, I can relate to someone who has lost a close friend at a young age. Relating implies some similarity.

Simply saying, "If I were black..." is not "relating" to anything. It's simply substituting your life lessons for someone else without recognizing that, perhaps, they didn't grow up the same way.

I guess if you see no problem with that, we have reached an impasse. I understand your opinion -- even agree with it to some extent -- but man, can't you see the other side at all?
I can but you see, as a hiring manager I have to hire the best possible candidates even for the most menial positions. Once I hire someone that person's performance is a reflection on my judgement and has a stake in my future with the company. We do have some very basic standards, no visible tattoos or piercings, no unnatural hair colors like bright red or purple, you must wear your uniform properly and lastly be able to communicate with the customers in a respectable manner. These aren't my policies, these come from people much higher up. This is company policy. I wish life was fair and all inclusive but it isn't. Do what you do on your own time, if you want to go by c-nate, sag your britches, turn your cap sideways with a toothpick in your mouth and walk like a pimp with cerebral palsy that's fine but as soon as you walk through our doors to do a job you will comply with our ideals. Like i said, don't like it open your own company.

But don't you see that this is part of the problem? The definition of carrying himself in a respectful manner, dressing appropriately, and speaking eloquently is defined by those in charge -- you know -- whitey. In order to be respected, he has to...more or less....act like a white person.

(It also helps if you have a white name.)

Looking good, Billy Ray!

That kind of enforces my point, though. It's not just one person not hiring someone because they don't like the culture -- it's company policy. That's how systemic it is.

You mention no visible piercings. I'm just curious -- does that include pierced ears for women (just a single piercing)?

And just for the record, I am absolutely a hypocrite about this. I would not hire someone to work in my office that did not present a professional image because I know that is what my clients expect. Should it matter how he/she looks and talks if the job gets done correctly? No......but it does. I totally get it....but I also hate it.....and also have no idea what to do about it.

Also, pimp with cerebral palsy = :slappy:

Feeling good Louis!

But can you understand why someone would not want to conform with the norms of the ruling power when that group enslaved and oppressed their race for hundreds of years? And, as much as people want to pretend it is, this [Mark May] isn't ancient history.

"Okay, okay -- you can sit in the front of the bus, use our bathrooms, department stores, and water fountains...maybe...MAYBE...even marry our daughters someday. But if you want a good job, you better learn some goddamned respect and starting dressing and talking like us, too!

Welcome to reality
When you're off the clock you can dress and speak however you want, if you want a job you will conform to our basic standards of conduct while on company time, cut and dry, no exceptions.

I see what you are saying, but I agree with at least part of the below...I mean if it were up to me I wouldn't wear polo shirts and khakis to work every day and I like to curse...but those things aren't up to me, if I come in with Bermuda shorts on and start dropping f-bombs in staff meetings, it won't matter what kind of job I do. Behavior at work has nothing to do with race. It's called a "professional environment" for a reason.

I was blowing bubbles and illuminating them with the strobe function on my phone camera flash this morning in a staff meeting. They did tighten up the dress code so no shorts or flip flops anymore, its pretty lame. I don't think any f-bombs were dropped by me, but probably an oversight.
