Bruising and discoloration are typically the result of the patient/donor not applying pressure to the insertion point after the needle has been removed. The discoloring is your blood gushing out of your vein unabated.

It is suggested that you apply firm pressure for ~5 minutes after the needle has been extracted.

I think they did a poor job getting the needle into the vein and the blood was exiting my vein, but not going into the needle.
