DL Willie Mobley (transfer to Orange Coast, Arizona and NMSU)

Fake letters aimed at Ohio State recruit

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

"I sure hope the person who did it wasn't 30 years old or something, because it's embarrassing." ? Willie MobleyBefore signing a letter of intent, Willie Mobley dealt with letters falsely sent.

In November, the defensive lineman from Eden Prairie, Minn., committed to play football at Ohio State. Despite continuing pressure from other schools, Mobley signed with the Buckeyes on Wednesday.

But not before he received two letters, on Ohio State letterhead and postmarked Columbus, allegedly signed by coach Jim Tressel. The first one showed up in early January, and the second one Wednesday.

They informed Mobley that his Ohio State scholarship offer was being withdrawn and wished him luck wherever he ended up.

Mobley wasn't fooled, mainly because of the amateurish presentation.

"I looked at them like, 'What the heck? This is fake,' " Mobley said last night. "There were all these misspellings, and you couldn't even read the signature, it was like, 'Jim, scribble-scribble.' "

Another bizarre story in a bizarre recruiting year.

Someone should start a poll for who the "real" author of the letters is.

1. EvanstonCat
2. CarolPSU
3. Jethro
4. Tom Lemming

Kudos to Mobley btw...

I sure hope the person who did it wasn't 30 years old or something, because it's embarrassing,

Smart kid who gets it. It's a shame so many of we so called "adults" who get caught up in the recruiting game don't

I would highly doubt it's a Michigan fan considering the Mobley situation and the fact Michigan wasn't one of his finalist. I think we can say with about 99% certainty it's definitely somebody that wanted him to go to Minnesota.

The article implies that similar letters have been sent to multiple Buckeye recruits.

So I don't think it's likely that it's a pro Minnesota issue so much as just a general anti-Buckeye one.

Would be interesting to see if kids from other schools have received them with some regularity as well.

I didn't realize this wasn't an isolated incident, the Mobley letter was the only one I had heard about. In that case it's entirely possible it could've been a Michigan fan.

That was pretty much the only part of the article not quoted. :)

Mobley said he called Tressel to tell him about the hoax, "and he told me a whole bunch of stories about these letters going around, that (quarterback recruit) Terrelle (Pryor) got one, too."

Through a spokesperson, Tressel declined comment.

Over 15 minutes of highlights of Willie. He is relentless! I say bulk him up to 280-285 and he'll be a terror on the interior.

excellent videos (above) of Willie Mobley!!

the really good news, besides his quickness, explosiveness, and tremendous closing speed...is that he was always on the field with multiple other D1 players. Nearly anyone can look good against inferior competition...but Willie was playing at a consistently high level...against good teams and good players.

I don't know if you noticed, but at the 3:15 minute mark of the first video, you will see #77 in a white jersey with purple trim, white pants, and a yellow helmet (very similar to LSU's uniforms) lined up at right tackle... that was Seantrel Henderson from Cretin-Derham Hall.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't notice. Any other big names you see him going up against?
