DL Willie Mobley (transfer to Orange Coast, Arizona and NMSU)

Willie Mobley moving on

Defensive lineman Willie Mobley has left the Buckeyes and hopes to transfer to UCLA, he said today.

?It had nothing to do with football, or my family,? said Mobley, whose mother recently moved to Los Angeles. ?I just wasn?t happy, and it was affecting my play and my motivation. It was a personal thing. I was going through an emotional roller-coaster.

?I knew something wasn?t right, and I decided I needed to start over.?

Mobley, 6 feet 3, 265 pounds, from Eden Prairie, Minn., suffered a shoulder injury while sitting out last season. He had been practicing with the third team recently.

UCLA was one of the schools that offered him a scholarship two years ago, and is also on the quarter system, like OSU, so Mobley can transfer before classes start there.

He will have to sit out this season, then have two years of eligibility remaining.

"I'm lucky, because not many schools are on the quarter system," Mobley said in a telephone interview. "Ohio State and UCLA both are on that system, otherwise I would have to sit out one year and one month. That would have been hard."

Mobley can play next season and will have three years of eligibility.

He considered UCLA when he was a senior at Eden Prairie (Minn.) High two years ago. But the Bruins were in the process of changing coaches, so Mobley chose Ohio State, a more stable program.

"I had a relationship with the coaches at UCLA, so that helped," Mobley said. "This is the first decision I have made as a man, with no one talking in my ear. I'm already happy with it. This is the right spot for me."

Mobley's family recently moved to Mission Viejo, making the decision easier.

Was always impressed with how Willie spoke, especially during the recruiting circus. UCLA is a smart move. It's not a step backwards, he'll get more PT, and he'll still get a top notch education. Darn shame we won't see him play, but best of luck!

Good luck Willie.

Enjoy the 2-3 years worth of Barkley hits.

He always had a smile on his face when I saw him, whether it was talking to gobs of boring media folk, or on the sidelines injured and sporting a sling.

I spent a lot of time last season in the training room with Willie after my shoulder surgery, and he was always in a good mood, freindly and down to earth. While I hate to see him leave us, Willie will be a success at UCLA, and as a bonus for him, he will have a couple more chances to get his shots at USC :wink2:.....

Willie is a guy who will be a success after football as well because he is such a stand up guy.

UCLA football: Willie Mobley to play at OCC; Joshua Shaw makes visit
September 27, 2009

Willie Mobley, a defensive tackle who wants to transfer to UCLA, said he will play for Orange Coast College this season.

Mobley left Ohio State in August and attempted to transfer to UCLA. He did not have the necessary credits, so he enrolled at Orange Coast.

?It would be too frustrating to sit out a whole season,? Mobley said. ?Playing doesn?t cost me a year and it will keep me in shape for next season.?

Mobley, who said he intends to enroll at UCLA in the summer, will still have three years of eligibility remaining. He used his redshirt season at Ohio State in 2008.
