Centerville?s Michael Bennett to play in U.S. Army All-American Bowl

Standout Centerville two-way lineman Michael Bennett is headed to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

The bowl selection tour committee will be at the school on Monday, Oct. 18, to award Bennett with his All-American status. The event will be televised live on the Centerville News Network at 8 a.m.

The 6-3, 275-pounder is just part of an imposing defensive line that has been a major part of the Elks? 6-0 record this season. Bennett, also an outstanding offensive tackle, has already verbally committed to Ohio State University.

The Scoop:

Bennett is quite the catch for Coach Jim Tressel’s Buckeyes. While the same can be said about any highly regarded high school football prospect who commits to play for Ohio State, Bennett is a rarity in that he could easily play on either side of the ball at the next level. Yes, he’s that good. He’ll probably play on the defensive line, most likely at tackle, as he is an extremely aggressive big man with great ball instincts. That he plays at a low pad level. Defensive coaches love that aspect about guys like Bennett as low pad level is not one of the easiest things for youngsters to learn. So Bennett is ahead of the curve in that regard, so-to-speak. And Bennett hails from Coach Ron Ullery’s Elks program which has long been a talent pipeline for OSU. Kirk Herbstreit, A.J. Hawk and Mike Nugent are all also from Centerville. So great things in Columbus can only be expected of Bennett.

Like I said in Braxton's thread, I went to the game last night for my first glimpse of these young men in person. Bennett definitely passes the looks test. He moves extremely well for a man his size (when he ran Braxton out of bounds on a scramble he was nearly step for step with him). Didn't have a whole lot of production though, and didn't dominate as frequently as I thought he would on offense, but it was a terrible night for the entire Elk squad (and their QB needs to learn to give it to the FB more if he wants his keepers to open up) so it may have just been one of those nights for the big man. I sure am glad to have him coming to Columbus though.

Free Rivals - Army Bowl adds Michael Bennett

CENTERVILLE, Ohio - When you watch game tape of Michael Bennett playing on the offensive line for Centerville (Ohio) High, it is easy to see why he is considered one of the top players in the state of Ohio and even nationally. But Bennett's future is on the defensive line when he enrolls at Ohio State next fall and the sky could be the limit when he moves across the line.

Regardless of which side of the ball Bennett is on now the U.S. Army All-American Bowl came calling and on Monday morning and presented the 6-foot-3, 275-pounder with his game jersey at a morning assembly at Centerville (Ohio) High School.

"I am really excited to be able to be around the highest of caliber guys," Bennett told Rivals.com about the honor of playing in the national high school talent showcase.

The 6-3, 275-pounder is just part of an imposing offensive and defensive line that has been a major part of the Elks' 6-2 record this season. Bennett has already verbally committed to Ohio State University.

The East vs. West game will be played on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, and will be televised live on NBC.

Bennett will be the first area player to participate in the all-star game since Marcus Freeman (Wayne) in 2004. Other area player alums include Nick Mangold (Alter) in 2002 and Angelo Chattams (CJ) in ?01.

Centerville is at Springfield (7-1) in a key GWOC Central Division game on Friday.

Even still, the recruiting guru's are confused about what position Bennett ends up. I've been under the impression it is DT first and foremost; but will he get a real look at the O-Line or has Heacock and Fickell decided that defense is where they need him?

I do. He's gonna be a great fit there.



He could be good at O-Line, but he's a game changer on the D-Line. Michael is D-Line all the way. No question.
