CENTERVILLE ? Michael Bennett doesn?t have a clue about National Signing Day for college football.
?I don?t keep up with any of that,? the Centerville High School standout lineman said on Monday, May 17.
There?ll be plenty of Ohio State University coaches giving him the lowdown between now and next Feb. 2. That?s when Bennett will sign to play with the Buckeyes.
The 6-foot-3, 275-pound two-way lineman verbally committed to OSU over the weekend. Offered by many BCS programs, including most of the nation?s top teams, he chose the Buckeyes over Big Ten rival Northwestern.
?My goal is to get to the NFL, and I just felt like Ohio State could push me to a higher level,? he said.
That Northwestern ? and not USC, Texas, Alabama or Florida ? made Bennett?s final cut was due to its medical school. He?ll be a premed major at OSU, which, like Northwestern, has one of the nation?s top medical programs.
But first, he?ll major in defensive tackle for the Buckeyes. A relative newcomer to defense at midseason last fall, Bennett quickly impressed with his jump off the snap. That was especially evident in film, the best way for recruiters to review prospects.
?That?s what most coaches like,? he said, ?that first hit, first pop off the ball.?
