Disgraced Former Penn State DC Jerry Sandusky (convicted child molester)

Penn State football press conference canceled by university president

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno says he's disappointed university President Graham Spanier has canceled the team's weekly press conference, without explanation, this morning. The press conference was supposed to begin in an hour, at 12:30 p.m., and Spanier canceled it without conferring with the coach, Paterno said.

Media from around the country is lined up dozens of people deep awaiting the press conference in State College, Pa., in light of a sex-abuse scandal affecting the campus. Paterno's former assistant Jerry Sandusky was arrested on Saturday and charged in the sexual assault of eight boys.

Paterno said he was looking forward to the opportunity to discuss concerns related to the scandal, as well as to talk about Saturday's game against Nebraska. The football players don't deserve having the press conference canceled, Paterno said.

Paterno said he wasn't told why Spanier canceled the event.

PSU's Assistant Athletic Director/Communications Jeff Nelson sent this message to the press last night, seeming to suggest that scandal-related questions weren't going to be welcomed:

"Media planning to attend Tuesday's Penn State Football weekly teleconference are advised that that primary focus of the teleconference is to answer questions related to Penn State's Senior Day game with Nebraska this Saturday. Head coach Joe Paterno and any Penn State Football student-athletes in attendance will be answering questions about the Nebraska game, Penn State's season thus far and other topics related to the current college football season."

One of the many problems of having a coach whose faculties are slipping is he cannot begin to deal with the kind of pressers coming their way now.

This will be Joe Pa's last season as coach.

Once the circling of the wagons phase is exhausted, we can expect to fully move into the throwing each other under the bus phase. That will be interesting. Spanier seems like a real weasel, so I'm not expecting any grace or dignity in his future actions.

Great discussion, journalists, lawyer, http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2011-11-08/penn-state-case-sexual-abuse-and-children

But it ends with this disturbing quote: Failure to notify authorities is a misdemeanor carrying with it a MAXIMUM fine of $200.

So as angry as you and I may be, in the eyes of the court it amounts to little more than a parking ticket or a speeding violation. Only Sandusky faces felony charges and appropriate punishment.

Curley's lawyer, Caroline Roberto, said on TV last night (saw a clip, no link) two things about Curley (paraphrasing):

1 - He had no legal responsibility to report the incident, as he wasn't covered by the statues requiring it.

2 - Even if he were, he fulfilled that responsibility by doing what also did: he reported it to his superior.

So, who could that be beside President Graham Spanier? According to this PSU organization chart, the Athletics Department reports to Spanier, who is below the Board of Trustees. To see the chart, use the link, and then select 'Univsersity'.

And if AD Curley did report the 2002 incident to Spanier, why is Spanier not being charged with not reporting the incident to the Pennsylvania state police?

It was mentioned a few pages back that the victim in these stories went through three years of grand jury testimony. I don't know if this true, but even one day of doing so makes this kid a man. I could never have done this at his age. There is a hero in this story, and it is him.
