Diet-Fitness-General Wellness Your Thoughts?

The hippies want us eating lentils

Who knew that those cavemen from way back when were leaving such a large carbon footprint?

http://shine.yahoo.com/event/green/how-much-protein-do-you-really-need-2523319/

However, it?s less well known that your protein choices can have a substantial impact on the environment. Meat and dairy production requires tremendous amounts of fuel, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers, and generates greenhouse gases. The Environmental Working Group?s (EWG) recently published Meat Eater?s Guide points out that if you ate once less burger a week it would be the environmentally-positive equivalent of taking your car off the road for 320 miles.

OK, what's wrong with me? I've been walking for exercise for the past several months. I started in about February and went through shin splints, fatigue, the normal stuff you feel after starting something like this. Then I seemed to break through a plateau and everything got easier - my breath got better, my legs felt strong and everything was good. Then July hit, heat indexes over 110 and I slacked off for a couple of weeks. I've been back at it for the last couple of weeks, but it's like I'm back at square one with the dead legs, shin splints (bad!) and low energy.

Is this diet-related? While I've been walking, I really haven't changed my diet. Am I just wasting my time until I make dietary changes? I dropped about 15-20 lbs from FEB - JUL, but my weight has been steady since that drop.

Back in March I tweaked my back and had to take a week off from going to the mountain. When I returned it was a struggle the first few days. The body deconditions quickly. Keep it up.

You may have hit a new plateau that you need to push past. Diet is always important in the process. It is a combination of exercise, diet, and attitude IMHO.

I have been trying for weeks now to break the 185 barrier permanently. I keep bouncing over and under it.

I just modified and extended my weights portion of my workout today with some new lifts. I am definitely feeling it this afternoon. It was an enjoyable day at the gym though as the scenery was very very nice.

I've been to the ER 3 times for just that. It can get pretty [censored]ing scary. I've also been up on a mountain hiking and had what seem like asthma attacks, can't breath, the body lacks oxygen so the heart starts pounding to try oxygenate the body. I try to eat right but hell, I want to enjoy the things I like too. If it means an occasional acid reflux attack, so be it.

You gotta enjoy life along the way....otherwise what is the point...

So true, like Billy Joel once said, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints, the sinners are much more fun". I try to eat right and exercise regularly and keep fit but if I can't indulge every once in awhile in good food, drink and the occasional smoke, why live?

Exactly.. a good cigar, a single malt scotch and something chocolate to finish....

Then there's the three C's: Camels, cannabis, cabernet.

Stress will kill you faster than anything you or I mentioned.

I find the 3 c's to be cabernet, then cannabis, then coochie. They each have their own distinct aroma, flavor and high, the next even better than before. :pimp:

I hadn't been doing any leg strengthening exercises because I thought with my hiking and running that my legs were getting enough work. Well today I decided to do some lunges and squats, I'll tell you something, they about killed me. They're definitely getting my full attention now. I'll be having to split my workout in half soon, it's getting too freaking long and I won't have the time soon to dedicate 1 hour and 15 minutes every other day. I think I'll just do lower body (abs, core, legs) one day and upper the next. We'll see how it works.

That's an assumption a lot of people make, and it's understandable. There's a big difference between using your legs "a lot" and lifting weights with them. Squats are the toughest lift of all imo. The gains are fast when you stick to them though. Form is crucial.

I'd actually been doing kind of a squat, I think it's called a squat cling and I use dumbells and a weighted vest. I'd also been doing the plyo squat. What killed me was the lunge with one leg elevated behind me resting on the couch. I really felt the burn. I also walk backwards up the steep inclines on one of the paved trails. That's supposed to be really good too.
