Devin Gardner (official thread)

Better arm and more elusive than Siller. Gardner will be good, really good but he'll need sometime. OSU doesn't want to risk it, handing the keys over to him maybe as early as his redshirt freshman year/sophomore year. Way too early, need a kid with more polish.

With as little as I know about the situation, this seems to be the most reasonable. I really, really liked Gardner and I think we would have been in decent shape to land him with an offer, but I am honestly much more excited about Montana right now.

God love WWH! Totally forgot about that one from his playbook! Totally needed a smile tonight... knew that I was in the right place!

:oh:

:io:

I think Woody already knows about the current status of NoD and scUM, but Lord knows, he sure would approve.

Do you think it is better than 50% chance Montana ends up at tOSU? I hope I'm wrong, but when he says it is gonna be a difficult choice because the offers have started to pour in and he is not in a hurry...sounds like an up hill battle to get a kid from SoCal to Cbus..IMO

One insider I trust is ready to start penciling Nick into OSU's 2010 haul...that's good enough for me. Add to that the info the BPRT has been hearing about Nick for almost a year and we all feel pretty good about OSU's chances.

what are their respective rankings? Gardner has 10 offers already...mostly BCS schools

I've said this before (I think twice now in this thread) but I will say it again:

I guess I don't understand why OSU fans don't trust the OSU staff enough to offer who they see fit...rather we want to see who else has offered before we get on board. Montana has 7 legit BCS offers...Florida State, Ohio State, Arizona, South Carolina, LSU, Maryland and Stanford. Look at it this way...Les Miles thinks enough of both Montana and Gardner to have offered both kids...do you trust him more than you trust JT?

thats true, but i didn't really mean it to come off that way, but in some cases you have to plays the odds as well. If there is a good chance to get Montana than by all means go for #1.

Now you are getting it...there is no problem putting all your eggs in one basket this early in the game. We are almost a year away from NLOID 2010...this is a different strategy than last year when they went all in on Boyd two months from signing day.

Jimbo Fisher doesn't offer projects. That offer means more to me than any other. It tells me that Montana is every bit a polished passer.

Agree 100%...love the fact Fisher likes this kid as well. Add to that Mike Stoops, Jim Harbaugh (a guy who knows a thing or two about playing the position) and Steve Spurrier (another guy who has developed a few QBs in his day) offering and I think Nick's offer list speaks for itself. Nevermind the fact a certain head coach with a propensity for sweater vests has offered as well.

cool...if it is good enough for you it is good enough for me, i'm always skeptical in a situations like these. lots of time, and offers have just started piling up

I trust the coaches. but doesn't mean i always understand the logic. i'm sure they have their reasons. My whole point was that on the surface it seemed like if the talent was equivalent and the chances of landing Gardner were significantly higher, plus the fact that there is more downside to Gardner going elsewhere, seemed like the offer was a no-brainer. there is obviously more too it, and the chances of landing montana must be great.

Amen, brother!

How could anyone, after the last three recruiting classes at tOSU, even think about questioning the staff and how they go about recruiting?

As good as the last four years of Buckeye football have been, the next three or four look even better. IN fact, every year we are distancing ourselves further and further from the rest of the Big Tenleven in regards to talent and depth.

Re: young Mr. Gardner - it seems he has seen the writing on the wall, and it's a shame that playing for his favorite school won't be something he realizes. But he's making the best decision for his football future, and that's what we wish for all these kids anyway.

Hold on now Nightmare's dad. Just because Montana is the staff's #1 priority doesn't mean he's going to accept. We'd all be happy with Montana, but until that happens, Gardner might still be holding out.

On the other hand, if the staff doesn't end up offering Gardner, I hope he goes to a program other than scUM.

I trust the coaches 100%, and think that they are outstanding decision makers. clearly among the best in the business.

does that mean they never make mistakes? No.

was offering Maurice Wells instead of Terrell Sutton or Javon Ringer (academics) a mistake? in hindsight, probably.

isn't the point about these forums discussion? can we not question the reasoning behind a decision without being called out for not "trusting the coaches"
