Devin Gardner (official thread)

I think people have blown the fact that Gardner grew up a fan of OSU way out of proportion...lots of OSU fans assumed we were the team to beat merely by offering. I don't think that would have necessarily been the case...OSU would have been in the thick of it but Gardner was never going to be a slam dunk.

LJB is also right when he says "Your assumptions concerning the difference in ranking between "Prospect A" and "Prospect B" are also incorrect." Let's see how these two stack up at some camps this summer. Montana is the guy the staff want, and as I said before that should be good enough...but if you need further evidence, the FSU, South Carolina, Stanford and LSU offers tell me a lot about what this kid's talent level is.

He continues to show interest in PSU, FWIW. I'm not sure why, considering PSU will have a true sophomore Kevin Newsome for the 2010 season, as well as class of 2010 early enrollee Paul Jones. He has apparently talked with the PSU coaches today, and RV sent him a letter at his school that he has yet to receive (no school today). I just find it surprising that he talks about wanting to visit PSU, and that he'll look at depth charts but style of play is more important...

If he continues to show PSU interest, I'd offer him just so tOSU doesn't have a fall back and UM gets left out in the cold.

UM fans are already thumping their chests over Gardner dropping us from his list, and are already comparing him to Pryor...

Shocking. Funny how every QB that comes their way is compared to TP. Weird.

I've always liked Gardner, but agree with LJB on him being a "project". I have always prefered Braxton Miller though as a long range prospect.

Do you think it is better than 50% chance Montana ends up at tOSU? I hope I'm wrong, but when he says it is gonna be a difficult choice because the offers have started to pour in and he is not in a hurry...sounds like an up hill battle to get a kid from SoCal to Cbus..IMO

what are their respective rankings? Gardner has 10 offers already...mostly BCS schools

Maybe some schools would do that, but not Ohio State. You win by getting the best, not by trying to keep the second best away from your rival.

thats true, but i didn't really mean it to come off that way, but in some cases you have to plays the odds as well. If there is a good chance to get Montana than by all means go for #1.

As it stands right now ... in the middle of his visit to Ohio State ... I'd say yes. Clearly, Ohio State wants to get something done early, and Montana has also mentioned an early decision. If the visit goes as planned, then I think that Nick leaves Columbus with Ohio State as his clear leader (if they aren't already).

According to Rivals/Scout/ESPN ... too early to tell. But Montana is "the guy" as far as Ohio State is concerned. If Gardner were close, then both would have "first come, first served" type offers right now.

I'm definitely happy with the Montana offer, however, in a lot of ways, Gardner did seem like the perfect prospect to bring in this year. We really have a nice opportunity to bring in a guy who can take his time developing as there is no rush for a guy to start soon with Pryor and Bauserman here. We also have the luxury of taking a risk on a guy and still being in good shape at the position because Braxton Miller is going to be a good option to take over after Pryor.

In short, it seems like the perfect year to swing for the fences with a boom or bust type guy with a huge upside and give him a couple years with Siciliano and see what he is in 2011 or 2012.

I think the staff wanted a more conventional pocket passer (though one that can move like Craig Krenzel and guys like that can move out of the pocket and extend plays with their feet) to go in between Pryor and Miller. Montana can run, but he is more of a polished passer and that kind of diversity is better for our QB corps. We have a run first guy in Guiton to develop as well, so it makes good sense.

I think you are underestimating Montana's ability to run. He is more mobile than Krenzel. I'd think McCoy more than Krenzel. Heck I'd sat more mobile than McCoy but maybe someone more knowledgeable than I will disagree

If Montana ends up being more mobile than Krenzel then I would consider pretty shifty on his feet. If I remember correctly, Krenzel made a lot of plays on his feet and even won some games with them (i.e. Cinci 2002).
I think our offense doesn't generally rely on having a QB with feet like TP. Generally speaking, I would be fine with any QB who can make plays on his feet similar to how Ben Rothlisburger does for Pittsburgh. He does just enough to keep the play alive, and rarely takes a big hit. Guys like Jake Locker are pretty mobile but they always take big hits.
Gardner seems like he is more of a scramble first type runner. Haven't heard much about his passing.

Jimbo Fisher doesn't offer projects. That offer means more to me than any other. It tells me that Montana is every bit a polished passer.

The recruitment of Gardner has been strange lately. The coaches obviously have their reason for not offering yet.

If I were a betting man I would suspect that over 50% of all recruits that get offered by their favorite school...commit to their favorite school. Thats important any way you slice it.

Is Montana better than Gardner? Who knows. Is there reasons the staff cooled on this kid? Maybe. Does Gardner fit our system? We have the athletes to run an offense that fits his skills.

We squashed Michigan season last year by getting Pryor...that single committment hurt them for year's...plural!!! I think if MSU and OSU can keep snagging all these Michigan kids and force Michigan to rely on OOS recruiting even more than usual it will hurt them. I guess what I'm saying is I would love for us to continue to squeeze the knuse. QB is one position Michigan has no margin for error. Their offense is the QB AND HIS DECISION MAKING. They are thin I hope MSU or us continue to snag their top QB propsects.

If OSU can infiltrate Cass Tech (scUm's Glenville), it will be uglier than usual up north...

Anyways, Devin fits the system RR is looking to run and I wouldn't be surprised to see him roll the dice in what RR refers to as an offense.

Montana is a bit of a McCoy type. I think of it as, EJ Manual playing style, Tate Forcier body type. If they bag on him for being around 180 pounds and 6'2", high 3 star guy, but his upside is pretty substantial.

I'm still a little surprised that OSU didn't offer Gardner too. Gardner's athleticism and size is an obvious advantage, but maybe it did come down to wanting a purer passer. I'm curious what your guys's vibe is on his interest in ND as well as PSU and UM. I'm not very optimistic, and the Irish offered a few more QBs too, which may be indicative, but I wrote him off to the Buckeyes when he picked your Junior Day over ours, so who knows.
